The Emmy nominated comedy series Drunk History is coming to DVD for it’s third season on March 1st, 2016. Special guest appearances include Maya Rudolph, Will Ferrell, Taran Killam, Michael Cera, Natasha Leggero, Jack Black, Dr. Drew Pinsky, Topher Grace, Johnny Knoxville, Adam DeVine, and more!

Drunken and often incoherent narrations provide a unique take on the familiar and less familiar people and events from our country’s great past with unforgettable results. Host Derek Waters, along with an ever-changing cast of actors and comedians, travels across the country to present the rich tales that every city in this land has to offer.
Review
I had not watched an episode of Drunk History prior to season 3. When I first popped in the DVD to review this sucker, which I had only heard great things about, I promptly stopped it 5 minutes in, went to the kitchen and poured myself a drink. I repeated this process numerous times because although watching drunk people tell stories is funny, it’s even funnier when you’re raising your blood alcohol level in the process.
Derek Waters interviews several people in various cities across the USA, gets drunk with them and then films the person telling a story which has historic significance to the place they’re currently in. Each story wraps up like one of Paul Harvey’s oldschool radio broadcasts – meaning that by the end you’ll have no choice but to say to yourself – holy shit, I learned something..I think… Each story, told in varying levels of drunkenness – is re-enacted by famous actors who mouth the words being spoken by the wasted person telling them.
It’s a brilliant concept and it works wonderfully seeing someone like Will Ferrell portray Roald Dahl and mouth the ridiculous and slurred words of the hammered person who is saying them. Stories move at bizarre paces and we bounce back to Waters and the interviewee sporadically to see them get even drunker. Waters himself always seems to be in a state of stupor so I’m never sure just how drunk he is himself. The man has to be the greatest living professional drunk on the planet.
My only gripes would be that I didn’t know who over 90% of the storytellers were but I have to assume they were all in show business. Dan Harmon (creator of Rick & Morty/Community) did an episode which I loved. Follow that up with people that could have been random townspeople for all I know. Luckily every story they tell is filled in with well known actors like Johnny Knoxville or Jason Momoa who plays a pirate at one point. That’s a win in itself. Maya Rudolph steals the season in my opinion and because she’s able to have such an expressive face, she truly shows how brilliant of a performer she can be since she’s practically doing a series of silent scenes and still killing it.
Drunk History Season 3 is a great time but I wouldn’t recommend binge watching all 13 episodes unless you truly want to get that wasted. I wouldn’t recommend several episodes in a row if you aren’t drinking either because like all drunk people in the room, over time they just become annoying. This is a show that requires crowd participation in order to enhance the experience. It’s hilarious, interesting because you’re learning something dammit and it’s one of the best interview shows on television because where else can you see shit like this?
