Invincible, The Best Superhero Comic of All Time, Hitting Bigscreen from Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg

by | Apr 4, 2017

Based on the acclaimed Image Comics series from Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley and Corey Walker, Invincible will be getting the big-screen treatment from director/writing and producing team Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Preacher, Sausage Party). Skybound Entertainment, Point Grey Pictures and Universal Pictures are behind the project with an undetermined release date at this time.

Mark Grayson is teenage superhero Invincible. He was a normal high school senior with a normal part-time job and otherwise normal life, except his father Nolan is the superhero Omni-Man, the most powerful superhero on the planet. At the age of 17, Mark begins to display superpowers, which come from his father being a member of the Viltrumite race, who, according to Nolan, pioneer the galaxy on a mission of benevolence and enlightenment.

The greatest superhero comic series of all time is finally, FINALLY getting a live-action adaptation and Skybound could not have found a cooler duo to bring this massive story to life on the bigscreen. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have shown their love of the comic book genre with their recent work on AMC’s Preacher series and they are attached to adapt The Boys for Cinemax as well (both Garth Ennis comic series).

As a massive Invincible fan this news excites me in a big way. I’m curious to see how much the first film will adapt since the series is sprawling in scope, featuring different worlds, aliens and a wide array of fascinating heroes and villains. A TV series would have been more practical, but I’m curious to see what kind of action and battles we will be getting in a movie sized budget (because Invincible features the absolute nastiest and greatest comic book clashes ever drawn — Ottley is one of the best artists on the planet and his fights in the pages of Invincible are legendary).

Skybound Entertainment, Point Grey Pictures and Universal Pictures announced today that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will write, direct and produce the feature adaptation of the Image/Skybound comic series Invincible by Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley & Cory Walker.

Invincible, Kirkman’s second longest running series after The Walking Dead, was first released in 2003, and follows Mark Grayson, a normal high school student with just one difference between him and his peers – his father is the most powerful superhero on the planet, and he, too, will inherit his own set of super powers.

The comic book, now on its 133rd issue, explores Mark’s journey as he discovers what it means to be the son of Omni-Man and the reality behind his greatest responsibility: protecting planet Earth.

“For nearly a decade I’ve had to endure the ‘what about Invincible?’ question as fans have watched The Walking Dead grow into the multi-media monstrosity it has become over the years. The answer was always that we were waiting for the right team to partner with. That team has arrived! The esteemed misters Goldberg and Rogen have proven themselves to be top-notch directors with a keen collective eye for stunning visuals after slumming it by writing hit after juggernaut hit,” said Robert Kirkman.

Kirkman continues, “Invincible’s surprising, edgy, shocking, and oftentimes blood-soaked story couldn’t be in more capable hands. With the team of Rogen, Goldberg and Universal, I’m very confident this will be another superhero movie, in a long line of superhero movies that continues to prove that it’s a viable, thrilling genre that will keep people coming to the cinema for years to come.”

“We will not sleep until the movie is perfect! No matter how much damage it causes our bodies, minds, and our most intimate relationships with those we love, we will not rest until Invincible is as great a movie as it deserves to be,” said Rogen and Goldberg.

The feature is part of Skybound Entertainment’s first look deal with Universal and will tout Skybound’s Robert Kirkman, David Alpert, Bryan Furst, and Sean Furst as producers. Point Grey’s James Weaver will also serve as a producer on the film.
Kirkman is repped by CAA, Circle of Confusion and Katz Golden Rosenman. Both Rogen and Goldberg are repped by UTA and Felker Toczek Suddleson Abramson.
