2016 Golden Globes Predictions – Mad Max: Fury Road & The Martian For Top Honors

The 73rd Annual Golden Globes will take place January 10th, 8 PM ET live on NBC. I’ve decided to try and predict this year’s winners…. Check out my predictions right here. Please note: I’m probably wrong. Big time.

I’ve highlighted my choices for victory in a tasteful blue, along with any thoughts that I decided to share amongst the MANY categories below.

  1. BEST MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA
a. CAROL
Number 9 Films; The Weinstein Company
b. MAD MAX: FURY ROAD
Warner Bros. Pictures / Village Roadshow Pictures / Kennedy Miller Mitchell; Warner Bros. Pictures
c. THE REVENANT
Regency Enterprises; Twentieth Century Fox
d. ROOM
Element Pictures / No Trace Camping; A24
e. SPOTLIGHT
Anonymous Content / Participant Media / First Look; Open Road Films

Mad Max: Fury Road is astonishing – it manages to strike that perfect and rare balance between being an entertaining blockbuster without compromising the quality and art aspects of the film itself and we rarely see such an accomplishment. Personally it’s one of my favorite films of 2015 and I’d love to see it win over The Revenant which seems like it’s gained a ton of momentum late in the year.

2.     BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA

a. CATE BLANCHETT CAROL
b. BRIE LARSON ROOM
c. ROONEY MARA CAROL
d. SAOIRSE RONAN BROOKLYN
e. ALICIA VIKANDER THE DANISH GIRL

3.     BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA

a. BRYAN CRANSTON TRUMBO
b. LEONARDO DICAPRIO THE REVENANT
c. MICHAEL FASSBENDER STEVE JOBS
d. EDDIE REDMAYNE THE DANISH GIRL
e. WILL SMITH CONCUSSION

Considering Eddie Redmayne already won a ton of awards last year for The Theory of Everything, I’m thinking Leo will finally win a big award even though he really should’ve landed it with The Wolf of Wall Street instead. The Revenant is brutal and uncompromising but it’s also a very simple film. That being said – No Country for Old Men struck many of the same chords and look how well that movie did a few years back.

4.     BEST MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

a. THE BIG SHORT
Paramount Pictures / Regency Enterprises; Paramount Pictures
b. JOY
Fox 2000 Pictures; Twentieth Century Fox
c. THE MARTIAN
Twentieth Century Fox; Twentieth Century Fox
d. SPY
Twentieth Century Fox; Twentieth Century Fox
e. TRAINWRECK
Universal Pictures / Apatow Productions; Universal Pictures

MATT. DAMON. Enough said.

5.     BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

a. JENNIFER LAWRENCE JOY
b. MELISSA MCCARTHY SPY
c. AMY SCHUMER TRAINWRECK
d. MAGGIE SMITH THE LADY IN THE VAN
e. LILY TOMLIN GRANDMA

Spy was actually a very funny film and I wanted to hate it, but I wound up laughing to tears. When McCarthy pukes on that dead guy I lost my shit – absolute hilarity.

6.     BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

a. CHRISTIAN BALE THE BIG SHORT
b. STEVE CARELL THE BIG SHORT
c. MATT DAMON THE MARTIAN

c. INSIDE OUT
Pixar Animation Studios; Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
d. THE PEANUTS MOVIE
Blue Sky Studios; Twentieth Century Fox
e. SHAUN THE SHEEP MOVIE
Aardman; Lionsgate / Studiocanal

What an amazing year for animated films. I loved both Pixar efforts but Inside Out seems to be the favorite going into this one. Anomalisa is the dark horse though and I wouldn’t be shocked to see it steal Pixar’s thunder.

8.     BEST MOTION PICTURE – FOREIGN LANGUAGE

Terra Incognita / Climax Films / Après le Déluge / Juliette Films / Caviar; Belga Films / Le Pacte

a. JANE FONDA YOUTH
b. JENNIFER JASON LEIGH THE HATEFUL EIGHT
c. HELEN MIRREN TRUMBO

a. PAUL DANO LOVE & MERCY
b. IDRIS ELBA BEASTS OF NO NATION
c. MARK RYLANCE BRIDGE OF SPIES
d. MICHAEL SHANNON 99 HOMES

First can I say holy shit Sly was nominated for playing Rocky? That’s amazing. Idris Elba wins this easily though – unless voters get stupid…

11.  BEST DIRECTOR – MOTION PICTURE

a. TODD HAYNES CAROL
b. ALEJANDRO G. IÑÁRRITU THE REVENANT
c. TOM MCCARTHY SPOTLIGHT
d. GEORGE MILLER MAD MAX: FURY ROAD

e. “WRITING’S ON THE WALL” — SPECTRE
Music by: Sam Smith, Jimmy Napes

Furious 7 made so much damn money that it’s impossible to ignore it completely and this is a musical ode to the late Paul Walker. Give it to em.
