September 19, 1969 – February 9, 2018

Jóhann Jóhannsson passed away suddenly in Berlin, Germany on February 9, 2018. At age 48, he was an artist of immense talent recognized for his work in film scoring by the Hollywood Foreign Press in 2014 with a Golden Globe for his score for The Theory of Everything and by the Academy of Motion Pictures in 2017 with a nomination for Best Original Score for his third collaboration with director Denis Villenueve on the film Arrival.

It is perhaps their partnership for which Jóhannsson became an instant symbol to audiences for uniquely powerful genre-film scoring. Film critics and fanatics alike were astounded by his elegant blending of orchestral and electronic instrumentation in Prisoners and Sicario. Often times, creating immense sonorous soundscapes that propelled the audience into a rarefied state of pure cinematic hypnotism. His was a sound unlike any other composer, which made him a highly-sought after collaborator. His final films include Mandy, The Mercy, and Mary Magdalene.

It is with great sadness that we at 615 Film say our goodbyes and pay our respects to his family and friends. May they and the rest of us find peace in the beautiful music he gifted to all of us.

His music is widely available, iTunes, and Spotify.
