Another superhero movie – good heavens Marvel is pumping them out this year. Ant-Man and the Wasp is the third one, from Marvel at least. Between those, Deadpool, the Incredibles and the upcoming Venom movie, it looks like the superhero genre is still going strong. No matter how sick I am of Superhero movies, I’d still rather see that than The First Purge, so here we all are. But good news – it turns out the genre still holds. If you can avoid having 20 superheros in the same movie, you can make a pretty entertaining piece of film. Ant-Man and the Wasp was so charming and funny and friendly, I couldn’t resist it.
As Scott Lang balances being both a Super Hero and a father, Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym present an urgent new mission that finds the Ant-Man fighting alongside The Wasp to uncover secrets from their past.
Of course if you want friendly, charming and funny, Paul Rudd is your man (not to mention handsome, thank you for your fan service). The entire movie was perfectly cast. Walton Goggins is the ideal villain, so good at being bloody creepy. Hannah John-Kamen is so badass – I loved her in Killjoys and she just keeps getting better. Abby Ryder Fortson was SO cute. Her chemistry with Paul Rudd as her dad was off the charts.
I found I was able to look past the cartoon physics Ant-Man, this time. Possibly because I’ve seen the first one and time to prepare? I think that’s because it was funny. Apparently when we laugh, it temporarily dampens our ability to think critically. Ant-Man and the Wasp is funny, like really funny; I laughed the entire way through. It was a good thing too, the growing and shrinking was everywhere. Why block things with your hand when you can just shrink to avoid the punch and then grow immediately after? Throw a pez dispenser and make it giant. I’m not actually complaining about it, the size changing is the whole appeal of Ant-Man. And even though it didn’t make sense, this was so much fun to watch.
So was Ant-Man and the Wasp worth watching? Yes. I might rage against the overabundance of superhero movies but I can’t help but recommend Ant-Man and the Wasp. Though I didn’t stay for the after-credits scene. No, Marvel, that’s enough of that. If you have something to add to your narrative, put it in your actual movie. When the credits roll, I’m done.
