You probably heard “The Raid” and then you saw the preview for “Apostle” and thought WTF? Aside from one jarring moment where Dan Stevens kicks a dude’s leg until it breaks inward, the preview for Gareth Evans’ ‘Apostle‘ looks like straight-up horror. Evans is mostly known for his groundbreaking two foreign action flicks ‘The Raid 1 & 2’, but if you were lucky enough to see his short film segment on the anthology collection V/H/S/2 titled ‘Save Haven’ then you know very well how capable Evans is while exploring horror… That short film was INCREDIBLE – and it focused on someone exploring a cult with insane consequences (sound familiar?). I really hope Apostle follows the Safe Haven formula and goes for broke during the climactic moments…

Apostle looks like The Witch but with Dan Stevens hitting cultists in the face with sticks and kicking ass. I’m kind of shocked that it’s going to be a Netflix exclusive, but so was the delightfully strange and brilliant Okja, so I’m hoping Apostle has the same kind of effect and impact on the streaming service, by delivering something just as spectacular as it would have been on the festival circuit. Evans is one of the best filmmakers today and I’m VERY excited to see what he does with his English-language debut.
