Batman Beyond #1: A Slow & Awkward Set-up That Ends with Excitement & Intrigue [Review]

I just finished reading the new Batman Beyond title that came out today. I am a huge fan of Batman Beyond and was really looking forward to it but, now I kinda feel let down…

Firstly I have to say that the Batsuit logo in many, if not most of the panels looked like it was just copy and pasted on top of the image instead of being a part of his suit like you imagine it should be. Aside from that I actually thought the art was really well done. Some of the panels had a sort of beauty to it and they did a great job of setting the tone of the book with the color scheme.

As far as the story goes I will try to avoid spoiling anything becasue I know some who want to know more before reading it but I will say that I hope they don’t go too far with the connection to Futures End. I do realize it was the entire set up to this new title and does need to be addressed but these new issue 1’s are supposed to create an easy jumping in point for new readers and I feel new readers might be left feeling less interested in the characters than they should be .

They included the Mecha-Superman from futures end that I thought was lame but what was even MORE lame was the seemingly pointless inclusion of him at all. Maybe he will be coming back as a bigger part of the story and possibly he was to blame for the sudden and unexplained Batsuit technical issues Tim experiences, but as for now the whole encounter just made me think “why…?” They ended the comic with a bit of a surprise that I’m sure will excite many and leave the rest intrigued to find out what happens next.

I sound like I really hated the issue and I didn’t hate it. I’m just a big fan of Batman Beyond and not a fan of Futures End, I found this new comic had a slow and awkward setup that was too similar to Futures End for my taste. But if you are a fan of Futures End then I’m sure you’ll love this new comic. If you are a new reader or unfamiliar with the events leading up to this new issue but had an interest in reading it then I would suggest picking it up because it does hint at taking a new direction that could be exciting to explore with familiar characters and intriguing new ones new ones.
