Cloverfield & 10 Cloverfield Lane Bring The Invasion to 4K UHD (Blu-ray Review)

Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane are now available for the first time ever on 4K UHD Blu-ray! From producer J.J. Abrams, director Matt Reeves (War For The Planet of The Apes) and director Dan Trachtenberg, check out my reviews for both releases and all the special features included.

Review

It was interesting watching Cloverfield for the first time since theaters for me all these years later… And to see it in 4K was something entirely different considering the movie was a hand-held found footage romp, and also one of the first major blockbusters to utilise this method and reignite the genre since the Blair Witch Project. So how does it hold up with a crisper image when the damn camera is constantly shaking all over the place? Ok. They upscaled the quality to hit 4K on this one and the results are still nauseating at times, but seeing it at home isn’t nearly as uncomfortable as it was in theaters. If anything, this might be the best way to see the film, because those aliens look damn good. The movie holds up well under the direction of Matt Reeves, who is about to remake Batman for the 12th time. Plus — we are on the verge of seeing a third entry into this franchise and I’m excited to see which direction they take it.

10 Cloverfield Lane was a shocking sleeper sidequel to the original Cloverfield and I absolutely loved it. The thing plays out like a feature length episode of Black Mirror and director Dan Trachtenberg’s close-quarters suspense thriller goes to such dark and uncomfortable places that you’ll be floored by the time this one concludes outside of that bunker. I actually prefer the sequel to the original even if it’s much smaller in scale, because of John Goodman’s incredible performance as a mentally ill survivalist who just may not be as crazy as we all assume him to be. 10 Cloverfield Lane looks amazing in 4K and the special features (although the same as the standard Blu-ray — which is always the case) are really fun when they start dissecting the story/effects and even sound that they applied to the finished product.
