San Diego Comic Con 2017 has come to a close, with stunning new trailers for shows like Stranger Things Season 2, Vikings Season 5, The Walking Dead Season 8, Ready Player One, Thor: Ragnarok and more! Check out my top 10 reveals right here.
#10. The Walking Dead Season 8 Trailer Teases Big Time Jump from Comics
“I actually don’t like this trailer that much overall. The ticking noise gimmick goes on WAAAAAAY too long and it felt like I was watching a preview for a grindhouse movie made in the 80’s. I don’t know who the hell edited it, but they did a shit job. So why is this my second fav. reveal of the day? Because of the ending, which absolutely shocked me. I honestly thought the Walking Dead TV series would conclude at the ‘All Out War’ finale, but it looks like season 8 will adapt all of that battle-filled comic arc and make the big time jump, leading fans into the Whisperers story… I’m stunned, but I’m kind of on board with this because I really enjoyed The Whisperers stuff, even more than Rick’s war against Negan.
The Walking Dead is an AMC television adaptation from showrunner Scott Gimple pulled from the pages of the hit Image comic series by Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard. The series stars Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Danai Gurira, Khary Paton, Lauren Cohan, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Chandler Riggs and Melissa McBride. Season eight will debut October 22, 2017.
#9. Westworld Season 2 Looks Too Good to Wait until 2018
“I’m kind of shocked that they have enough footage with the show still aiming for a 2018 return, but in the wake of season one’s batshit crazy finale, I love the violent teaser we got for now.”
From HBO and Jonathan Nolan comes the sci-fi drama series Westworld, based on the original film from Michael Crichton. It stars Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Rodrigo Santoro and Jeffrey Wright. Westworld will return for season 2 in 2017.
#8. Fear The Walking Dead Trailer Teases Mayhem When Season 3 Returns in September
“This latest season of Fear The Walking Dead has been superior than the series this show spins off of… No bullshit. Main characters die shockingly and it doesn’t have to happen in a finale either, plus the action, brutality and writing has been stellar. If you gave up on Fear TWD, you need to rethink your choices and come back. You won’t regret it.”
From AMC and showrunner Dave Erickson comes The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirman’s companion series Fear The Walking Dead. Starring Cliff Curtis, Kim Dickens, Frank Dillane, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Lorenzo James Henrie, Mercedes Mason, and Colman Domingo, season 3 returns September 10, 2017.
#7. Voltron Legendary Defender Season 3 Trailer!
“Prince Lotor (AJ Locasio) is the new villain as Voltron returns next month with season 3! Even though we only get 7 episodes when it does come back to Netflix, another 6 will hit this October to round out the entire third season. Plus… We just had season 2 this past January, so I’m not upset at this — at all — this is a lot of Voltron in 2017 and I’m stoked.”
From Dreamworks, producers Joaquim Dos Santos/Lauren Montgomery (The Legend of Korra) and Netflix comes the animated series Voltron: Legendary Defender. Starring Kimberly Brooks, Rhys Darby, Josh Keaton, Tyler Labine, Jeremy Shada, Bex Taylor-Klaus and Steven Yeun. Season 3 will be available August 4, 2017.
#6. Herr Starr Takes Over Preacher in New Trailer
“I’ve been waiting, patiently, sorta, for Herr Starr to arrive on Preacher season 2 and this new Comic-Con trailer is loaded with the villain. Pip Torrens is playing him perfectly — in this dry, creepy, disturbing manner that is both completely psychotic and hilarious. Read THIS for my most anticipated Herr Starr comic moments that I want to see on the show.”
From AMC and showrunner Sam Catlin (Breaking Bad) comes the TV adaptation of Garth Ennis’ and Steve Dillon’s iconic DC: Vertigo comic series Preacher. The pilot episode was written and directed by executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Starring Dominic Cooper, Joseph Gilgun, Ruth Negga, Graham McTavish, Pip Torrens and Ian Colletti. Season 2 debuted Sunday June 25, 2017.
#5. Vikings Season 5 Teases Vicious Civil War Between Ragnar’s Sons
“How this show is still going strong, and appears to be even crazier without its main lead in the picture now is crazy to me. It just goes to show how creative and fascinating this world truly is and how great a showrunner Michael Hirst is. When Game of Thrones isn’t on, Vikings is the show you all should be devouring. Hail Ivar the Boneless!”
From the History Channel and showrunner Michael Hirst, comes the groundbreaking series Vikings. Starring Katheryn Winnick, Clive Standen, Gustaf Skarsgard, Alexander Ludwig, Alex Høgh, Peter Franzén, Moe Dunford, Jasper Pääkkönen, Marco Ilsø, Jordan Patrick Smith and Jonathan Rhys Meyers the show will debut its fifth season November 29, 2017.
#4. Bright Trailer Reveals True Power of Netflix Original Films
“I’m legit shocked that this movie is coming to a streaming service and not theaters. This damn movie would make a shitload of money in theaters. A shitload. I think it would make money if they released it in theaters late December too – and that’s usually a dumping ground for weak-ass genre action flicks like this (remember Assassin’s Creed?). As a fan of both Training Day and Warcraft – sign me the hell up immediately. This one just became one of my most anticipated films of 2017.”
From director David Ayer (Suicide Squad) comes the original Netflix film ‘Bright‘. Starring Will Smith, Joel Edgerton, Noomi Rapace, Lucy Fry, Edgar Ramirez, Ike Barinholtz, Enrique Murciano and Jay Hernandez, the film will debut exclusively on the streaming platform everywhere this December 22, 2017.
#3. Stranger Things Season 2 Trailer Features Thrilling Return of Eleven
“The use of Michael Jackon’s ‘Thriller’ in the trailer, the arcade at the beginning, the Ghostbusters costumes, the Halloween setting — what isn’t there to love about the official Stranger Things Season 2 trailer? Nothing. The Walking Dead is no longer October TV’s king of horror.”
From Netflix, creators Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer, comes the highly anticipated supernatural/coming-of-age mystery series Stranger Things. Starring Winona Ryder, Noah Schnapp, Matthew Modine, David Harbour, Charlie Heaton, Natalia Dyer, Millie Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin, Gaten Matarazzo, and Cara Buono, season 2 returns October 27, 2017.
#2. Thor Ragnarok Trailer is the Buddy Cop Superhero Film We Never Knew we Needed
“I don’t know how this trailer managed to out-do the weird awesome vibe of the teaser, but it really did. Hulk and Thor may have just become Marvel Studios’ new favourite duo. Sorry Rocket and Groot — Ragnarok is coming and it looks frikken brilliant.”
From Marvel Studios and director Taika Waititi, comes the highly anticipated third film in the franchise, Thor: Ragnarok. Starring Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Cate Blanchett, Tom Hiddleston, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Jeff Goldblum and Idris Elba, the film hits theaters November 3, 2017 (US).
#1. Ready Player One Trailer is Nerd Heaven
“I didn’t read the book, I didn’t believe the hype when this was announced, I knew NOTHING before Comic-Con, but this trailer blew my brain out of the back of my skull. There’s a Tron cycle racing the DeLoreon from Back to The Future for some reason and I saw multiple famous movie characters of the past. I want this movie right now — I don’t care if it looks insane and silly, that’s WHY I want it immediately.”
From Warner Bros. and director Steven Spielberg, adapted from the novel by Ernest Cline, comes the huge blockbuster film event Ready Player One. Starring Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Simon Pegg, T.J. Miller, Mark Rylance and Ben Mendelsohn, the film hits theaters March 30, 2018.
