David Tennant Replaces The Late Robin Williams in Upcoming Chew Film

by | Jun 22, 2015

Chew is an Image comic series from writer John Layman and artist Rob Guillory, which revolves around an agent who has the ability to see the past of “anything” he eats. The upcoming animated film adaptation stars Steven Yeun, Felicia Day and David Tennant.

Jeff Krelitz, who previously worked on the animated Peter Panzerfaust animated feature (also another Image comic series), is directing Chew. The acclaimed comic series was previously attached to the Showtime network in talks to be a TV show, but after that didn’t work out an animated movie was optioned instead with Walking Dead Star Steven Yeun selected to voice the leading man Tony Chu.

Robin Williams, an avid comic book reader until the day he shockingly passed was a huge fan of the Chew comic series and was originally signed on to voice Mason Savoy – Chu’s partner.  After Williams’ death, the project was stalled even though Yeun and Day had already recorded their parts. Now it looks like Dr. Who and upcoming Jessica Jones (Marvel’s next Netflix series) star David Tennant has stepped in to fill the void as Savoy.

Tony Chu is a cop with a secret. A weird secret. Tony Chu is cibopathic, which means he gets psychic impressions from whatever he eats. It also means he’s a hell of a detective, as long as he doesn’t mind nibbling on the corpse of a murder victim to figure out whodunit, and why. It’s a dirty job, and Tony has to eat terrible things in the name of justice. And if that wasn’t bad enough, the government has figured out Tony Chu’s secret. They have plans for him, whether he likes it or not. Presenting a twisted new series about cops, crooks, cooks, cannibals and clairvoyants.
