The Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo (AKA: Calgary Expo) is a four-day pop-culture convention held in annually each spring Calgary, Alberta at Stampede Park. Attendees can shop hundreds of vendors and exhibitors, check out panels and workshops, meet their favourite stars and creators, and celebrate what makes them geeky with thousands of other fans in cosplay. There is something for every fan at Calgary Expo.

The comic book fans have spoken and the Calgary Expo has not only listened to what they are saying online, but they have answered their cries for more comic creators to attend the show – in a big way.

To our delight (yes I am one of those fans asking for comics to come back in a big way to the Calgary Expo), we have some huge announcements that include the legendary Jim Lee and Robert Liefeld (two of the founding fathers of Image Comics). That was just the beginning because Chew co-creator Rob Guillory will also be attending his first ever Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo! If you aren’t familiar with Chew, the Image comic series recently concluded its epic run and I highly recommend you all check it out by scooping up every trade possible. Cannibalism, demon chickens, aliens, food-centric superpowers – dark comedy, Chew is one of the best comic series I’ve ever read.

Chad Hardin, Dan Parent, Don Rosa, Fernando Ruiz, Jae Lee, Kyle Higgins, Mark Texiera, Megan Hutchinson, Nen Chang, Sara Richard and Tyler Jenkins are also making appearances to round out the stellar artists and creator block of guests so far. The Calgary Expo isn’t even done revealing their entire line-up as of this article’s publish date. Note — Calgary happens to be home to some of the best comic book artists and writers on the planet – including Fiona Staples (Saga) and Ryan Ferrier (D4ve). So I’m hoping they’ll all be able to make the show this year, but I’ll accept if they can’t because well — they’re all busy as hell trying to make more tasty comics for us to devour.

I’ve been attending the Calgary Expo for YEARS as part of the press and my first year there we had Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, Jeff Lemire and many, many more A-List comics talent. Like most conventions, the focus tends to turn away from comics and towards film/TV, which is great for a lot of people, but I’m one of those guys who goes to the show and digs through longboxes in search of hidden gems and number 1’s to add to my growing comics collection. It’s nice to see that the Calgary Expo is bringing comics back and doing so in a huge way.
