Deadpool Lands Golden Globe Best Picture Nomination; Plus Full List of Nominees Announced

Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) reacts to Colossus’ (voiced by Stefan Kapicic) threats.

The 74th Annual Golden Globe Nominees have been revealed ahead of the live broadcast for the ceremonies on January 8, 2017 which airs 5-8PM PT/8-11PM ET on NBC. Jimmy Fallon will host the Globes and Meryl Streep will be the recipient of the 2017 Cecil B. DeMille Award.

Observations on nominations

Deadpool nabbing a Best Motion Picture ‘Comedy’ spot along with a leading actor nomination for Ryan Reynolds is a massive tip of the hat to that film’s success this year. It’s actually quite stunning and just as impressive as the R-Rated superhero comedy’s box office haul to see it acknowledged alongside Oscar hopefuls like La La Land and Sing Street. We don’t see superhero flicks on this stage unless it’s a special effects or sound editing Oscar nomination – so this is a huge win for the genre and popcorn flicks in general.

My personal pick for best Motion Picture Drama would be Hell or High Water, which was the surprise hit of the summer and easily one of 2016’s best films – maybe even the very best. As for the TV nominations, I would love to see The Night Of clean up the mini-series categories, but that OJ Simpsons show slayed at the Emmys and I do see that continuing into the new year as well. Game of Thrones should win again as Best Drama, while Atlanta deserves a comedy victory, but This is Us might be the surprise win after a very successful Fall debut and I wouldn’t be shocked if it came in as the favorite.
