Deathgasm: The Best Horror Film of The Year is a Brutal Soon-To-Be Cult Classic for Metalheads [Review]

by | Oct 3, 2015

From director & writer Jason Lei Howden comes the New Zealand metal themed horror sensation Deathgasm. Starring Milo Cawthorne, Kimberley Crossman and James Blake, Deathgasm is currently playing select theaters and is available now on VOD.

Two teenage boys accidentally summon an evil entity by delving into black magic.

Holy shit. Two words I uttered on far more than one occasion during my viewing of this year’s best horror film: Deathgasm. When Brodie’s mom goes on a meth binge and gets locked up in a loony bin, he’s forced to move in with some ultra religious relatives who don’t take too kindly to his love for various forms of METAL. Growing up a metalhead myself, I can assure you that director Jason Lei Howden’s script is the most faithful loveletter to this genre of music since Adult Swim’s Metalocalypse.

Brodie (Milo Cawthorne needs to be in more movies dammit) winds up bonding with another metalhead named Zakk, who is played by the enigmatic James Blake. This character, by the end of the film, is destined to go down in history as one of the coolest midnight movie classic quotable costumed heroes of our time. Duelling chainsaw action packed frenzy kill battles and more top off a Satanic hellfest of epic proportions after Brodie and Zakk’s metal band “DETHGASM” — ALL CAPS BECAUSE LOWER CASE IS FOR PUSSIES — winds up playing an evil hymn that summons a force of demons and sends their small town into chaos.

Deathgasm owes much to Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead trilogy in the way it presents the monstrous demonic forces that Brodie and Zakk go to war with.  The movie is loaded with gore – make no mistake that Deathgasm is indeed Brutal as Fuck (which is rightfully the unofficial subtitle of the film), but it’s also hilarious. I’m not so sure that non-metal fans will fall in love with it as much as I did, but screw them. The soundtrack is amazing and it’s loaded with a variety of HARD metal acts that I wasn’t overly familiar with. Didn’t matter – the songs were damn good.

If that doesn’t sell you, get this…. There is not one, but multiple demon kills via sex toy. When Brodie and Zakk come charging out of that room in slo-motion and begin slapping demons in the face with bulging dildos and a rope of anal beads you’re either 100% sold or 100% get the hell out. Deathgasm is the most metal feature of 2015 and well…. possibly ever – I don’t know how this thing was even made and made so well in this day and age. The effects are wonderful, the acting is fantastic, the writing sharp/clever and the film is destined to become a cult classic. Hail Satin!
