Dune Rats – The Kids Will Know It’s Bullsh*t: A Punk Rock Work of Art [Review]

by | Jan 19, 2017

Australia’s Dune Rats are gearing up to release their second album ‘The Kids Will Know It’s Bullshit’ on February 3, 2017. Danny Beusaraus (vocals/guitar), Brett Jansch (Bass) and BC Michaels (Drums) have made a punk rock work of art, that is if your kind of art involves a lot of drugs, skateboarding accidents and probably more drugs.

I loved ‘The Kids Will Know It’s Bullshit’ – these Australian bastards are genuine ‘we don’t give a fuck’ punk rock musicians who care about one thing – having a good time and it really shows in their music. I hadn’t heard of Dune Rats before, so I’m new to the game but I’m happy that I signed up this week because it’s nice to hear something real for a change in a climate that features over-produced pop punk that was made solely for teenage girls who think that the Sex Pistols are some sort of porn prop.

They’ve described their music as Dunecore Stoner Pop and their bio lists them as “3 hyperactive stoner c**ts who didn’t come ear for a hair cut”. Sure. Why not. I think that makes a lot of sense and after listening to the new album about 3-4 times in a row, the larger picture is starting to become clearer. The tunes are stripped down, feature incredibly catchy choruses and they’re all accessible tracks for anyone who just enjoys damn fine rock music. This isn’t scream-o and it isn’t something that would fit in with the rest of the radio hits, but it deserves to be in spite of the explicit lyrics and content.

The Dune Rats are hilarious (check out their Dunies TV episodes) and their music is a lot of fun. They also made a “choose your own adventure’ interactive video for the single Scott Green and I recommend you give that a go as well. The album is a flawless exercise in excess with songs about getting high, getting drunk and you know – whatever else kids do these days that is totally against the law. My personal favourites are ‘Bullshit’, ‘Buzzkill’ and ‘6 Pack’, but really the entire record flows very well from beginning to end with each song essential to the entire journey.

‘The Kids Will Know It’s Bullshit’ is a great way to start 2017 and definitely one of the finer rock records I’ve heard in several months. Dune Rats are some crazy sons of bitches but I appreciate that and from what I can tell they are the real deal, which I appreciate even more. The songs pack a punch, they get straight to the point and the album doesn’t let up once.
