Keven’s Thoughts: I’m voting for Game of Thrones. That’s right – I think HBO’s recently concluded masterpiece Game of Thrones – is the superior franchise over Lord of The Rings. But how does GOT even exist if there is no LOTR preceding it you ask? How about shut up!? That’s what I say without giving any clever argument in retort. I just personally think that GOT is the more mature, shocking and enjoyable franchise overall. I’ve read all the books, short stories, comics, you name it – if it has A Song of Ice and Fire or Game of Thrones on it, then I probably own it. I grew up adoring the LOTR films and I even love the Hobbit trilogy too so I’m no hater. We did a Fight to The Death scenario where Harry Potter even fell victim to LOTR and my vote was the deciding factor in that battle.
It was a very close fight, but both Facebook and Twitter swayed in favor of LOTR over GOT, making my lone but extremely powerful single vote — meaningless. At least it wasn’t a landslide? I honestly didn’t think GOT would win this battle, but I was curious in the wake of the final season how fans would rank it alongside the OG. To me this fight is like Metallica (GOT) going toe to toe with Black Sabbath (LOTR). I believe voters likely came to the conclusion that because GOT doesn’t exist without LOTR – that the original retains the crown. That’s cool – but in my opinion – The Battle for Winterfell and The Battle of The Bastards are the two greatest large-scale fantasy fights of all time. The next two after those? Helm’s Deep and the final clash in Return of The King.
Sean Bean? Dead in either scenario so that doesn’t matter too much, but I appreciate that he’s some of the glue that ties these two awesome things together. I love both, but I will stand by the fact that if I could only keep one for the rest of my life – it would be Game of Thrones.
Winner – LOTR (2) vs GOT (1)
