So this is a musical in space, right? RIGHT? It is going to be odd seeing director Damien Chazelle release a film that doesn’t deal heavily with music, but after the trailer for First Man dropped last night, it looks like we’re in for a thrilling adventure. With an extremely talented cast consisting of Ryan Gosling, Claire Foy, Kyle Chandler, and Jason Clarke, on paper First Man should be a major Oscar contender.
First Man will follow Neil Armstrong, and the legendary space mission that led him to become the first man to walk on the Moon on July 20, 1969. Based on the trailer, it looks to be very thrilling with a touch of drama and space action. Ryan Gosling looks very poised and in control of his character and if he knocks it out of the park, there could be another Oscar Nomination in his future. The trailer is cut together well and it’s definitely attention-grabbing, however it shows way too much of the movie. This is becoming pretty common for movie trailers nowadays, and it needs to stop.
This will be the first film that Damien Chazelle is directing, but didn’t write. This isn’t necessarily cause for concern, but it’ll be interesting to see how he tackles a vision that didn’t come from his own mind. First Man is huge for him as director because if he delivers an Oscar-Worthy thrilling space film, then it will prove that he can jump genres easily as a director. Time will tell, though.
First Man hits theaters October 12th.
