Five Finger Death Punch – Got Your Six: Dares Mainstream Radio to Play Their Heaviest Album Yet [Review]

by | Sep 4, 2015

Five Finger Death Punch are set to unleash their sixth studio effort on September 4th – titled ‘Got Your Six’. I’m no longer surprised at the group’s longevity but I tell you what I am shocked at – their uncompromising need to stay heavy as hell in spite of constant radio play.

Metal’s most radio played band just dared stations to continue playing their stuff with the release of ‘Got Your Six’, which just so happens to be the heaviest record of their career since the debut album. ‘Boots & Blood’ is the most vulgar track that FFDP have ever recorded and will likely be a staple of live shows for years to come. The band have become one of metal’s most popular groups in recent years with a plethora of incredible tours and constant love from mainstream radio, but that certainly didn’t stop them from unleashing some of their most brutal tracks to date.

Everything from the zombie filled cover, which is their coolest yet, to the non-stop fury front to back, ‘Got Your Six’ is a freight train. It’s a nice change of pace from their double album in 2013 which explored more facets of the crew. This sixth studio album is a one-two combo that goes straight for the jugular and doesn’t let up for one second. Sure we still have memorable choruses being sung by Ivan Moody, but they’ve always done that. The riffs, the drums, the content – everything was amped up here and I’m in love with FFDP’s bravery for going in such a heavy direction despite the pressure to remain more rock-friendly as opposed to metal.

‘Ain’t My Last Dance’ is HARD, but that chorus is enough to get radio-play without ever compromising the brand. ‘No Sudden Movement’ was made to be played while mowing down a horde of the undead using a Jesse Ventura Predator machinegun. Everything here is fast, hard and to the point without coming off as generic or forgettable. FFDP continues to deliver when I think they’ve tapped out of material and that’s why I love them. In the face of adversity and metal dicks like myself, these guys happily fight back and they fight back with some of the angriest moshpit friendly anthems every single time.
