Game of Thrones is an adaptation of the epic dark fantasy novel series A Song of Ice and Fire from writer George R.R. Martin. The series airs exclusively on HBO and stars Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey and Emilia Clarke.
During HBO’s TCA (Television Critics Association) presentation, programming president Michael Lombardo spilled the beans on how many seasons they’ll for sure be planning out for Game of Thrones saying:
“Seven seasons and out has never been the [internal] conversation. The question is, ‘How much beyond seven are we going to do?’ Obviously we’re shooting six now, hopefully discussing seven. [Showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss] feel like there’s two more years after six. I would always love for them to change their minds, but that’s what we’re looking at right now.”
The talk of doing a prequel series has always been up in the air depending how well the show does (which seems to be more than OK these days). Lombardo commented on that potential as well:
“[T]here’s enormous storytelling to be mined in a prequel, if [George R.R. Martin] and Dan and David decide they want to tackle that. At this point, all the focus is on the next few years of the show. We haven’t had any conversations about that at this point.”
