I loved watching this year’s Golden Globes (on fast forward). After Nicole Kidman’s incredibly long speech following her acting nod victory for Big Little Lies, there was no time to listen to anyone else’s speech as she killed the evening’s runtime. Oprah’s lifetime achievement award was a great excuse to hear a rousing speech about ‘Time’s Up’ for all sexual predators and even though it was about a half hour long, it was quite moving. The sexual harassment scandals dominated the evening, whereas last year it was Trump of course, but enough about that shit, let’s talk movies and TV.
I love that Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri won Best Drama and that Frances McDormand/Sam Rockwell each took home acting awards… If you haven’t seen this incredible black comedy from the brilliant mind behind In Bruges, then you truly are missing out on one of 2017’s best films. Like Hell or High Water, Three Billboards is a brilliant original film, but unlike last year’s bankrobbing thriller, Three Billboards could actually steal the Oscars it rightfully deserves in 2018.
James Franco winning for Disaster Artist, Allison Janney winning for I, Tonya and Guillermo del Toro for Shape of Water was everything I had hoped for ahead of the ceremonies and I’m really happy that the Hollywood Foreign Press got it right this time. The TV wins this year baffled me, but I haven’t seen The Handmaid’s Tale yet (and I will correct this soon), but Big Little Lies was a show I tried to get into and failed. I couldn’t get past the dialog and characters (it was all incredibly annoying). So while the TV wins were boring, I appreciated all the love given to performers and filmmakers behind the movies I really enjoyed from 2017.
