In the past few years, the horror genre has been making a come back. Sure, every year we still get a few of the cardboard cut out atrocious horror flicks like 2017’s The Bye Bye Man and this year’s Insidious: The Last Key. Unfortunately, that brand of horror movies will never go away. There has been a shimmer of hope in the last few years with movies like The Witch, The Babadook, It Follows, and Drag Me to Hell, movies that demonstrate how genuine horror can be far more terrifying than cheap, uninspired jump scares. Today we got our first trailer for A24’s next horror film Hereditary, and it looks to be a terrifying and thought-provoking masterpiece.
The buzz around Hereditary from this year’s Sundance Film Festival has been very substantial. Fans and critics have both said it is absolutely terrifying and even a few said it was this generations Exorcist. We’ve heard that before but there is something about this trailer that hints A24 might have a masterpiece on their hands. The trailer is very well cut together and looks to have genuine horror and paralyzing imagery, not to mention an attention-grabbing score.
Time will tell if Hereditary will be as good as the early buzz suggests. The critic Metascore is already sitting at an 89, so the pressure is on for this one to deliver. Could this be another horror film to get attention from The Academy? 2017’s Get Out (Which I was not a fan of) proved that horror movies still have a chance to get Oscar Nominations, so it is definitely possible that it could happen this year. That is an early and bold prediction, but we don’t get trailers this good every day.
Hereditary is set to his theaters June 8th.
