Evil resurfaces in Derry as director Andy Muschietti reunites the Losers Club in a return to where it all began with “IT Chapter Two,” the conclusion to the highest-grossing horror film of all time.
Twenty-seven years after the Losers Club defeated Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård), he has returned to terrorize the town of Derry once more. Now adults, the Losers have long since gone their separate ways. However, people are disappearing again, so Mike (Isaiah Mustafa), the only one of the group to remain in their hometown, calls the others home. Damaged by the experiences of their past, they must each conquer their deepest fears to destroy Pennywise once and for all…putting them directly in the path of the shape-shifting clown that has become deadlier than ever.

“Forgettable horror sequels are a dime a dozen in Hollywood; they’re almost never anywhere near as good as their predecessors and fail to reach the caliber of the movie that helped lay the foundation (or make a profit for a studio). While It: Chapter 2 is based on Stephen King’s popular novel, the physical copy of which is as heavy as a bag of apples, it still has a lot to live up to thanks to its forerunner that was a smashing hit and a near-perfect horror movie. Based on the box office numbers and reception, Warner Brothers gave returning director Andy Muschietti more than just the keys to the sequel, but the whole garage, its tools, and anything else he wanted in order to make Chapter 2 live up to every bit of the first installment. As a result, It: Chapter 2 is more than just a horror movie. It’s a blockbuster with the mentality of “go big or go home.” Going all out to the very end It: Chapter 2 swings for the fences and hits a home run. At just a hair below its predecessor, it’s not only the year’s best horror movie, but also one of the best horror sequels ever made.
Of course, the main attraction of the It franchise is Pennywise the Dancing Clown. Much like the casting of Heath Ledger as the Joker in The Dark Knight, the majority of people questioned the choice of Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise, but Bill proved them wrong the first time around with his interpretation of the nightmarish clown, which didn’t leave the minds of its viewers two years ago. As chilling and creepy as the previous entry, Skarsgard cements himself as one of the best horror villains in cinematic history with Chapter 2. Multiple scenes throughout this sequel help solidify his case, but one where Pennywise rips into his own face seals his legacy among the other iconic horror villains (at least in this critic’s opinion)”. There’s nothing more messed up and enjoyable than feeling like YOU’RE INSIDE an IT film, and that’s exactly what happens when you watch IT: Chapter Two on a nice 4K TV at home. After watching one of my favorite movies from 2019 again, I found myself even more disturbed by some of the sequences because they look so damn life-like in this format. It’s unsettling to say the least, especially during the THING tribute which involves a severed head sprouting insect legs… Beautiful effect by the way.
So the movie looks and sounds absolutely incredible on 4K – but it’s those SUMMERS OF IT documentaries that make this package worth the price of admission alone. You’ll get two 40 minute parts for both films and each are almost as impressive as the actual films. Watching Skarsgard do his Pennywise impression without any makeup is equally as jarring, if not more-so in the documentary. These are fascinating looks into the making of these remarkable two films, including a ton of behind-the-scenes and insight into the process. You’ll get to see creator Stephen King on set filming his cameo for Part Two, you’ll also get to see James Mcavoy goofing around with an in-costume Pennywise as his floppy deflated head is stapled to some scenery during the final confrontation.
I realize some of you might be waiting for a special two-film director’s cut set or something of IT, but don’t wait – go out and buy this on 4K Blu-ray today. It’s one of the 2019’s best and a film that holds up tremendously well despite it’s insane near-three hour runtime.
