Lara Croft Go: Fun & Interesting Puzzle Game With Nostalgic Tomb Raider Callbacks [Review]

by | Sep 28, 2015

I typically don’t get too hyped about app games, they usually feel like a fad that dies for me shortly after. I can honestly say that Lara Croft Go does not suffer from the same lack of long term draw that many apps do.

Lara Croft Go is a turn by turn puzzle solving game that has players guiding Lara through unique and interesting locations. The goal is to start at one end and work your way to the finish, while avoiding traps and bloodthirsty creatures. The unique mechanics of the creatures you encounter along the way is fun, but no encounter comes without important steps you must take to solve the puzzle. Like in many games featuring Lara, there are buttons and switches that you must figure out how, and when to use to complete your objective.

In the first few levels the game is really basic and mostly serve as a tutorial to explain the future puzzles. The only real problem is that it continues feeling simple for a bit too long. The levels eventually do get fairly difficult but its never too hard for any average person to eventually overcome. No geniouses required here. In later levels you’ll come across what is essentially the game’s boss. He, or she, provides added challenge to the levels giving you less moves to plan your next or you’ll get eaten.

The level designs are good and have a decent amount of detail that really help build the world you’re exploring. There are a few nostalgic callbacks to the old Tomb Raider games that long time fans might enjoy. The music is not overbearing like in many app games which is a good thing because it can’t be turned off individually from the other sound effects. While the levels are a ton of fun to solve, there are too few of them. Fast solvers could easily beat the game quickly feel like they didn’t get good value for their money. Luckily, the ending of the game might be hinting at more to come; hopefully as a free add-on and not a separate purchase. If you’re feeling stuck on a level you can purchase a hint for an outrageous $5.

Overall, the puzzles are fun and interesting. Most average people will get stuck a few times but nothing is unsolvable and overcoming a challenge is most of the fun in a puzzle game. The game feels short but possibly hints at expansion and even if it doesn’t, $5 isn’t too much for a few hours of enjoyment.
