LEGO® Marvel Super Heroes 2 is an all-new, original epic adventure and sequel to the smash hit, LEGO® Marvel Super Heroes. Bringing together iconic Marvel Super Heroes and Super Villains from different eras and realities, this original branching storyline transports players into a cosmic battle across a myriad of Marvel locations ripped from time and space into the incredible open hub world of Chronopolis. Packed with signature LEGO humor for fans of all ages, gamers will go head-to-head with the time-travelling Kang the Conqueror through Ancient Egypt, The Old West, Sakaar, New York City in the year 2099, Xandar and many other imaginative settings in this fun-filled journey spanning the Marvel Universe.

Just when I thought TT Games had done it all in 2017, they dropped YET ANOTHER stunning LEGO videogame and they ended the year with their best one yet – LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2. This game…. has the most insane roster of any game I’ve ever played. If there’s some weird Marvel Comics character you’ve always wanted to play as? This one has it. From Fin Fang Foom to Squirrel Girl, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 has them all and they’re all a blast to play. It also doesn’t hurt that the story was co-written by comic writer Kurt Busiek, so you’re in for a real treat watching the Marvel Universe explode all over your face and have it make sense at the same time.

Loaded with comedic moments, one of the best opening levels of any game in 2017, LEGO Marvel 2 is legit one of the best superhero games ever made. They could have just made a Guardians of The Galaxy LEGO game and stopped there, but they had to go ahead and drop a game that has over 200 playable characters (minus the X-Men – who cares at this point?) and feature a time-hopping, world-jumping story that features both the best and strangest corners of the Marvel universe and have them all work beautifully together. You will fight MODOK in a wild west saloon before journeying to the year 2099 to battle futuristic foes. Making Kang The Conqueror the big bad in this game was the perfect move in order to bring all these eclectic Marvel favourites together into one place.

If that wasn’t enough for you — there are several multiplayer battle modes which are a riot to play, complete with Grandmaster commentary, or you know — if 200 plus characters isn’t enough, you can CREATE your own superheroes as well and load them into the game whenever you want. You get to pick your own superpowers and everything. To say this game is stacked is kind of an understatement to be honest. I’m still finding new things to do and I feel bad every level I don’t rescue Stan Lee. Yes – you must rescue Stan Lee in every level and he’s a pain in the ass to find. Speaking of the difficulty level here — yes the puzzles can be a bit much at times for little kids who just want to smash everything, but that’s also kind of great, because most puzzles involve breaking some random crap in order to build some random crap that saves the day. So it all works out in the end!

The game has been out for a minute, so instead of just filling a review with several paragraphs telling you to go buy it (just buy it), I’m going to drop my top 10 favourite playable characters from the title. Check it out.

#10. Man-Thing

I’m just happy that you can be MAN-THING in a game. I never, ever, in a million years expected Man-Thing to be a playable videogame character but I’m ecstatic that TT Games found room for the big weird swamp creature.

#9. Fin Fang Foom

fin fang foom lego

I just love saying Fin Fang Foom’s name outloud. There is not a better sounding, ridiculous name on the Marvel roster than this giant green dragon. Also — he has the ability to turn massive and stomping around the LEGO world in Godzilla size is a lot of fun.

#8. Hit Monkey

He’s a monkey but he’s a hit-man. Hit-Monkey. Get it? Holy crap am I loving the deep diving in this game. Much like Man-Thing, having Hit-Monkey as a playable character is both absurd and beautiful all the same. He doesn’t have any incredible special moves or anything, but he does have two guns and shooting badguys with a well-dressed monkey is a win in my book.

#7. Carnom

I’m a huge Venom fan. I also love me some Carnage. And yes — you can most definitely play as both of those characters separately in this game. But why do that when you can be CARNOM – A HORRIFYING COMBINATION OF BOTH SYMBIOTE BADDIES?!?!

#6. Squirrel Girl

squirrel girl lego

All comic fans know and love the classic Dr. Doom comic panels where he’s being overrun by squirrels? Well — you wield that disturbing power in Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2. As Squirrel Girl, you can throw squirrels at your enemies and your special creates this furry tornado of the little beasts as they wrap around you, before launching in all directions to take out your foes. Squirrel Girl is awesome.

#5. Lockjaw

The beloved space dog is indeed a playable character in Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2. That Inhumans TV show may suck, but if you’re a fan of the comics, then look no further than this game where you can be freaking Lockjaw as he licks his enemies to DEATH. No joke.

#4. Groot

Let me rephrase that – Baby Groot AND Old Man Groot – together. Yes you can actually switch, with the press of a button, between the adorable little psychotic Baby Groot to the traditional adult Groot. Both versions have fighting advantages depending on your enemies and both are a blast to play in the game.

#3. Ms. Marvel

Forget Mr. Fantasic — Ms. Marvel has the ability to stretch her limbs and viciously destroy her enemies with her Gumby-like appendages. She also has the ability to shrink, grow massive and you know – turn into a ball to roll around and crush badguys. She’s available early on and she’s an essential character to the game.

#2. Spider-Gwen

Both Gwenpool and Spider-Gwen are hilarious fill-ins for the absent Deadpool here and I honestly don’t miss the red-masked murderous joke machine. Spider-Gwen even plays the damn drums for her special, when she of course isn’t taking in-game selfies right in the middle of a vicious boss fight.

#1. Star-Lord

star lord lego

Star-Lord’s special ability is the best videogame special move of 2017. Simply holding down one button sees him put on his signature headphones and listen to music straight from the Guardians of The Galaxy movies while he dances, enemies dance, bystanders dance — all while you’re blasting the baddies away while strutting confidently down your pathway. Star-Lord’s blasters are incredibly fun to use and when you mash that up with 80’s classic tunes, you wind up with the best LEGO Marvel character to date.
