Mumford & Sons’ third studio effort ‘Wilder Mind’ is curiously a more raucous rock affair than their previous two releases and I’m strangely OK with that even if I do greatly miss that ‘Sigh No More’ folk essence.
‘Believe’ and ‘The Wolf’ are about as high energy as Mumford & Sons have ever been, seeing the band embrace a much more rock oriented sound. It’s not that the boys have never rocked in the past, they just rocked in a more folkish manner – and I dug that more. Even the quiet moments here don’t resonate with me as well as they did on ‘Babel’.
I’m finding that with each release, Mumford & Sons are adding more unnecessary layers to their music and in the process they’re losing that stripped down spark that inspired a generation with brilliant folk music.
