The upcoming American live-action film adaptation of the classic Manga/Anime series Death Note is directed by Adam Wingard (The Guest, Outcast) and will star Nat Wolff (Paper Towns). The film is set to begin production next Spring.
Death Note is a Japanese manga series written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. The story follows Light Yagami, a high school student who discovers a supernatural notebook from a shinigami named Ryuk that grants its user the ability to kill anyone whose name and face they know. The series centers around Light’s subsequent attempts to create and rule a world “cleansed of evil” as “God” using the notebook, and the efforts of a detective known as L to stop him.
Nat Wolff, who was one of the rumoured candidates to take over the new Spider-Man role at one point in time has landed the leading role in Death Note. His character likely won’t be called Light Yagami since this is the American adaptation but he’ll be playing the kid who finds the death book which grants the user an ability to simply write down anyone’s name in it — which as a result makes that person die shortly thereafter. Director Adam Wingard’s involvement in this project is what makes it even more interesting as each of his projects have been amazing – with You’re Next elevating a simple horror premise and turning it on itss head while The Guest is one of the best films of recent memory. Jeremy Slater (Fantastic Four) has written the screenplay but let’s not blame him for that one just yet.
