New IT Clown Costume Revealed But is it Better Than The Original?

by | Aug 16, 2016

From director Andy Muschietti (Mama) and based on the acclaimed novel by master author Stephen King, comes the big-screen adaptation of IT.  Starring Jaeden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard, Sophia Lillis, Jack Dylan Grazer, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs, Jeremy Ray Taylor and Bill Skarsgard. The film (part one) hits theaters on September 8, 2017.

In a small town in Maine, seven children known as The Losers Club come face to face with life problems, bullies and a monster that takes the shape of a clown called Pennywise.

EW has released the full look at Bill Skarsgard in his Pennywise The Clown costume for the upcoming big screen remake of IT. The upcoming adaptation will take place in the 1980’s for part one (aka when the main cast were kids) while part two is slated to take place in the present day with the surviving members being adults. In the novels, the past was set in the 50’s while present day was set in the 80’s.

“The costume definitely incorporates all these otherworldly past lives, if you will. He is definitely a clown from a different time. There is almost a doll-like quality to the costume. The pants being short, the high waistline of the jacket, and the fit of the costume is a very important element. It gives the character a child-like quality.”
said Emmy-winning costume designer Janie Bryant (Deadwood).

Do you like the new look? It’s definitely more “alien-like” than the original costume and make-up job from the 1990 TV mini-series. But you’ll notice that both make-ups feature the same larger head shape which is a nice touch… I mean after all, this thing, is not of this world. It’s a monster that eats children and changes shape to become your worst fear (or you know, deceptively changing form to look like a loved one).

I personally love the updated costume (but I’m still not convinced Skarsgard was the best choice), while fellow writer Sean isn’t too sold on the new costume but likes Skarsgard for the role. Sound off below – which one is better?
