HAPPY

New York Comic Con 2017 (NYCC 2017) has come to a close and although the trailers and reveals are never as plentiful as San Diego Comic Con over the summer, fans were still left with some great previews and news drops.

HAPPY

#5. The Justice League Movie Looks Less Dead on The Inside With Every New Trailer

After the news that Zack Snyder had to step down from completing his direction of the Justice League flick to deal with a family tragedy, Joss Whedon rode in on his Marvel horse of wonder, then killed that horse, and started injecting his cool brand of humour and wit into reshoots of DC Comics’ most important project. The end result? Justice League is trying really hard not to look dead on the inside like every character was in Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice. The ‘Heroes’ soundtrack was spot-on and the way Aquaman looks so happy to be fighting all of Darkseid’s goons alongside his teammates? Perfect. This is the first time I’ve been kinda excited to see a Justice League movie.

#4. The Runaways Trailer Teases a Dino-Fan Favorite as Hulu Dominates NYCC17

Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona’s Marvel comic series about a group of kids who discover that their parents are super-villains, sounds freaking fantastic. Yes – I have not read it and I’m kicking myself, because I’m a huge fan of Vaughan’s work (including Saga, Y: The Last Man). I do know about the characters however and this preview looks incredibly weird and cool. There’s even a dinosaur in this show, which you will “kinda” get a quick glimpse of. Hulu dominated NYCC this year with trailers for some incredible new original series.

#3. Castle Rock Takes You on a Weird Journey Through Stephen King Land

2017 is the year that Stephen King conquered both film and TV. And it’s still a year where adaptations of his like “The Mist’ completely bombed — but it didn’t matter, because Gerald’s Game, IT, Mr. Mercedes and more were all sure-fire hits. Castle Rock is apparently this weird original mystery series that takes place IN the world of King’s novels. J.J. Abrams is there to help launch this sucker (on Hulu) and if you look closely you’ll catch a lot of familiar Stephen King easter eggs. I’m REALLY excited to see what the hell this show is about and just how much of King’s other novels we’ll see in it. It’s such a bizarre idea but one that I’m stoked to see play out as a series.

#2. Future Man Looks Hysterical From the New Kings of TV – Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg

Hulu for the hat trick! Future Man stars Josh Hutcherson as a lonely gamer recruited into some time travelling suicide mission because of his ability to beat a videogame that ended up being a training module sent from the future. Equal parts comedy gold, gore and crazy action, Future Man looks like it could have been a feature-length film, but I’m stoked that it’ll be an ongoing new series. Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg are kicking a ton of ass producing some unreal new TV shows like Preacher and the upcoming adaptation of Garth Ennis’ The Boys is still on the horizon! But first, Future Man! Don’t sleep on this one.

#1. Happy! Looks Crazier Than the Crazy Ass Comic It’s Being Adapted From

I loved the Happy! mini-series from Image Comics. Grant Morrison and Darick Robertson’s twisted tale about a piece of shit ex-cop who tries to redeem himself after teaming up with a little girl’s imaginary friend to try and save her, is so dark, so disturbing and so damn good I’m stunned that the TV adaptation looks so incredibly faithful. I mean – look at this thing – it’s pitch perfect. Christopher Meloni and Patton Oswalt? Already a candidate for best on-screen duo of the year and I’ve just seen the batshit bonkers trailer. Crank co-director Brian Taylor is BACK my friend and this looks like he managed to adapt the source material while putting his own acid-trip spin on the sucker with glowing results. I cannot wait to see this show.
