From Brian Michael Bendis and Andrea Sorrentino comes the new ongoing Marvel series Old Man Logan, which focuses on an elder Wolverine trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic wasteland dominated primarily by villains. Check out my review of issue 2!
He may be an Old Man, but never before has the world needed Logan as much as it does now. The people he loved have become mere memories. The world that he loved has decayed, becoming a festering Wasteland. But in a world devoid of heroes, even someone who is the best there is at what he does may find themselves overmatched by evil.
I was not enthralled with the first issue in this new ongoing series of Old Man Logan. Andrea Sorrentino’s art is mesmerizing but I found myself baffled at the overbearing Secret Wars plot tie-ins, which I think weighed down the potential of continuing this amazing character created years ago by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven. At the end of the first issue, Logan finds himself climbing a large cliff for some reason and by the time he gets to the top – issue 2 only gets weaker after every page turn.
I don’t know what the hell is going on. Logan runs into a femalish Thor who zaps him with lightning because he ventured into territory that was forbidden. Logan then does battle with a tiger and Sorrentino’s art blows my mind here in the only highlight of this issue. I’m not reading any other Marvel book at the moment so I don’t understand what is going on with all these other characters. If you’re up to date, then maybe you’ll appreciate the overwhelming play to include the colliding universe aspect of this series. I was craving another stand-alone series but that’s not what Bendis is going for this time.

To make matters worse, Emma Frost tells Logan that he may not have killed all of the X-Men like he initially believed he had, so now the guy is even more puzzled than myself who is reading the damn comic. I swear to Christ if it turns out that Logan didn’t murder the X-Men than I will throw a freaking tantrum for the ages. To completely re-write such a powerful moment from the original run would be blasphemous. I’m hoping that Frost’s comments were simply because she’s unaware that this Logan is from an alternate universe and she’s saying these things completely confused of what is happening.
I’m extremely disappointed in the storyline thus far for Old Man Logan and issue 2 is far worse than the lackluster debut. Like I said earlier though – if all of this confusing bullshit is because of the current cross-over event, then it only reaffirms that the majority of Marvel and DC books just aren’t for me because they wind up sacrificing story for appeasing the brand.
