Oscars 2019 Nominations Led by ROMA & The Favourite

The 91st Academy Awards will air live February 24, 2019 with leading Oscar contenders ROMA and The Favourite coming in with 10 nominations each. Check out the full list of nominees here:

A lot of people were pretty bummed out over Bohemian Rhapsody winning top honours at this year’s Golden Globes ceremonies and since then, film critics have been wallowing in agony over the impending doom that would be the 2019 Oscar nominations… The time is here and as it turns out, nobody gives a shit either way. The Favourite is a surprise in my opinion with 10 nominations while ROMA getting 10 as well is not surprising in the least. I haven’t seen either movie and I just… don’t want to. But this is coming from a guy who watched a half hour of A Star is Born and then shut it right off.

Some interesting observations: Black Panther landed a Best Film nomination, which is really great for Marvel Studios and I hope they feel proud for purchasing such a significant spot in the broadcast. Shame it won’t matter. Honestly, Bohemian Rhapsody could win once again in this category, but I’m betting the Academy goes for a shocker and we get a movie like BlacKkKlansman or Vice winning Best Film. I just don’t see ROMA (which is a black and white foreign flick) or A Star is Born taking it this year but we’ll see….

There are a lot of people saying that 2018 was a weak year for film, but in my opinion it was one of the best of the past decade with some incredible releases like Mandy, Annihilation, Mission Impossible Fallout, Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse (which MUST WIN animated film of the year), the list goes on and on. BUT – these are typically considered genre films and the Academy just doesn’t honour these types of movies above the technical categories and that’s a shame. I knew Mandy wouldn’t get recognised but seeing a more mainstream release like Annihilation snubbed so hard is shocking to me.

I skipped the Globes this year and I’m probably going to skip the Oscars too and save myself 3+ hours of grief, but that doesn’t mean I’ll stop speculating the results. Stay tuned for our annual OSCAR BATTLE ROYALE to see who will reign supreme and also to get a glimpse of our website’s collective predictions on who will win every single category below:
