Outcast is a demonic possession horror comic series from writer Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead) and artist Paul Azaceta. The Image Comics release has just dropped issue #13 so check out my review right here.
Kyle Barnes has been plagued by demonic possession all his life and now he needs answers. Unfortunately, what he uncovers along the way could bring about the end of life on Earth as we know it. It begins here – with this terrifying new horror series from THE WALKING DEAD creator Robert Kirkman and artist Paul Azaceta.
So…. I was under the impression that issue 12 was the majority of the battle between our lead and the demon that had possessed Kyle’s sister. If that was indeed the “battle” – then issue 13 is the war. Holy shit. We were on a short hiatus with Outcast there for a while and with this latest chapter, Robert Kirkman and Paul Azaceta have come out swinging. Hard. The majority of this comic is a violent clash between brother and sister in one of the most brutal and intense fights that I’ve seen in a comic for 2015. It’s extra hard knowing that the monster controlling Kyle’s sister has nothing to lose when it comes to the physical well-being of it’s host. Watching this woman bash her own head into the shower wall was really, really unsettling.
That isn’t even the half of it. Kyle begins to figure more of his “powers” out and he uses them against the evil force that has turned his sibling’s body into a weapon. The title of the chapter “this little light” is spot on and completely misleading all at once. Such a cute little label being slapped on the most violent issue of Outcast yet is a clever move there Kirkman. You sick bastard.
With as much action as issue 13 has within it’s rapidly paced content, we’re also progressing towards something else disturbing as well. Cause why not? A character’s life hangs in the balance after what could be a fatal wound and that man in black is scarier than ever…. With the next issue being titled “Get behind me Satan” — I cannot wait to see what happens next. Outcast is mysterious, gripping and at times I find myself puzzled and angry that Kirkman is being such a damn tease with everything, but with the series being so entertaining and well written I just have to suck it up and enjoy the demonic ride.
