Preacher TV Adaptation to Explore “Massive Tapestry of F***ing Weirdos” According to Seth Rogen

From AMC and showrunner Sam Catlin (Breaking Bad) comes the TV adaptation of Garth Ennis’ iconic DC: Vertigo comic series Preacher. The pilot episode was written and directed by executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Starring Dominic Cooper, Joseph Gilgun, Ruth Negga, W. Earl Brown, Lucy Griffiths and Elizabeth Perkins, the series will debut May (pending), 2016.

In a recent interview with Crave Online, producer, writer and director of the upcoming Preacher AMC series Seth Rogen commented on how the show is set to shock devoted fans of the Garth Ennis comic series while still paying homage to all the big moments in order to keep things interesting.

“We are changing the specifics of how the narrative is unfolding. A lot of the building blocks we are not changing, a lot of characters we’re keeping, but we want to make a show that if you’re a fan of the comic, you don’t know what to expect. And we have no interest honestly in just doing a literal page-to-page adaptation. It just seems like the most boring creative endeavour one could go on!”

One of the most interesting components of the Preacher comic series was how Ennis explored the backstories of other bizarre supporting characters and at first one would assume the TV series wouldn’t even attempt adapting this but Rogen disagrees.

“I mean there’s some things that even Garth will argue, is quick to admit that we probably should not even attempt to put on television. There’s some characters, we’re talking about maybe we combine these two into one person. But to us the tangential element is one of our favorite things. The fact that it does go off into these other worlds and explore these other characters, I mean that’s something that we wholeheartedly intend on indulging in because it’s one of the best parts about the comic. Just the massive tapestry of fucking weirdos. [Laughs.]”

After merging with a bizarre spiritual force called Genesis, Texan preacher Jesse Custer has become completely disillusioned with the beliefs to which he had dedicated his entire life. Now possessing the power of “the word,” an ability to make people do whatever he utters, Custer begins a violent and riotous journey across the country. Joined by his gun-toting girlfriend Tulip and the hard-drinking Irish vampire Cassidy, Custer loses faith in both God and man as he witnesses dark atrocities and improbable calamities during his exploration of America.
