Director Quentin Tarantino is currently in talks to write/helm an untitled film chronicling the Charles Manson murder-spree which involved the brutal death of Roman Polanski’s then-wife Sharon Tate. Brad Pitt and Jennifer Lawrence have been in talks to star in the movie.
Rumoured to be in the final stages of script completion, Tarantino (The Hateful Eight, Inglourious Basterds) is gearing up to direct a film about the Charles Manson murders that occurred in 1969 and included the horrifying death of actress Sharon Tate, who was 8 months pregnant at the time. Harvey and Bob Weinstein are currently involved as producers, but it’s still early in the process as the film likely won’t begin filming until summer 2018. Tarantino is scouting A-List talent to round out his cast including Pitt and Lawrence.
The victims, aside from Tate included: writer Wojciech Frykowski, coffee heiress Abigail Folger, celebrity hair stylist Jay Sebring and Steven Parent, a friend of the family’s gardener.
The murderers: Tex Watson, Susan Atkins, and Patricia Krenwinkel. Charles Manson never actually committed the physical act of murder, but he ordered his cult members to cause chaos on his behest. Manson is still in prison to this day.
It’s unclear if Tarantino’s film will solely be about Manson, Tate and the murder that shocked the world, or if it will simply be a backdrop to another story. This is however, the first time that the director has ventured into the world of true crime. The untitled Manson murders film will be Tarantino’s 9th feature film overall, following up the Oscar-winning Hateful Eight.
I’m kind of stunned at this development, since it’s the first I’ve heard about it and Tarantino was thinking about a third Western or a prison-inspired story as potentially his next effort. As a big fan of true crime and with Tarantino being my favourite filmmaker however, consider me on-board. Big time.
