South Park is an Emmy Award-winning animated series about four boys living in a screwed-up Colorado town. Between tragedies global and local, as well as parental and celebrity interference, Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny manage to have themselves a time.

Review

Holy shit South Park. To think that Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s little offensive cartoon has been airing for 20 years now. TWO DECADES – it blows my mind. What makes this aspect even nuttier is that South Park actually manages to get better over time. Season 20 was written and aired during the 2016 US election, so be prepared for that. Mr. Garrison has taken the place of Donald Trump, and at this point I’m not sure who is actually worse – Garrison promises to fuck all terrorists to death and people seem to really be on board with that campaign promise….

While the series tackles that storyline head on – it also has a heavy plotline that deals with internet trolls and how Kyle’s father moonlights as Skankhunt during evenings on his computer. At one point he drives a former Olympic athlete to kill herself after humiliating her online so bad. The subject matter is dark as hell, but the way Stone and Parker craft their episodes is absolute genius because as offensive as this content can get (and man oh man does it ever) it never feels like it’s being done for shock value. South Park may be the most impressive satirical comedy series in the history of television at this point, because there are absolutely no restraints or fucks given on these 10 incredible episodes.

From the member berries (which I fell in love with completely) to the soundtrack (see the intense moment when all the girls break up with the boys in order to prove that women are independent and won’t be held back by sexist internet trolls) — South Park season 20 plays out like a masterful 10 episode film. Every single ending leads directly into the next episode making this season the most binge-worthy yet. From where South Park began to where it is now – is jaw-dropping… From Christmas Poo and gay dogs to school councillors talking children out of committing Twitter suicide — South Park has evolved into one of the strongest TV comedies today.

Watch the Comic Con 2016 panel. It’s an hour long and is moderated by Chris Hardwick – as they delve into the show’s past and how Matt and Trey are able to evolve this cartoon series throughout the years. I love how they admit that the main reason they get credited with being so timely and current in their content is just because they procrastinate so much and wind up writing/animating and airing episodes the week that they’re supposed to go live. That would definitely explain how they were able to tackle the election storyline so well in 2016.
