Spread #8: In a World Dominated by Cannibals & Monsters – How do the Children Survive? By Kicking Ass [Review]

by | Jun 26, 2015

From Image Comics creative team writer Justin Jordan and artists Kyle Strahm and Felipe Sobreiro comes the post-apocalyptic horror series Spread. Check out my review of issue 8!

Ten years ago, we dug too deep and unleashed something we couldn’t control. Something that twisted and warped every living thing in its path. Something that remade the world in its own image. The Spread. One man has found a child who could save the world, but he has to fight monsters, raiders, cannibals, religious fanatics, and one cranky baby to do it.

The Children’s Crusade has begun. I was on the fence with Strain but issue seven sold me right back with the origin story of the preacher. That stand-alone or ‘break’ issue was amazing – one of the best single issues of any comic this year. Issue 8 is the first chapter of the second arc and we kick it off by focusing on a group of warrior children struggling to stay alive in a world dominated by scavengers and monsters.

Strahm and Sobreiro have improved immensely over the course of this series and the art in issue 8 is the finest yet. Spread can get gross, really gross. Inspired by John Carpenter’s The Thing, this virus infects you and bursts from your body in unimaginable and awful ways. The violence is unpleasant and it’s even more haunting when Strahm and Sobreiro draw some of these characters with the most innocent faces…

We catch up with No and his group after the savage attack on the compound which seems like forever ago after becoming acquainted with this new crew of feral children and of course their paths eventually collide in what could be one of the most incredible story arcs of the year. There is a lot of potential here for greatness and I’m already sold with issue 8. Spread is a violent and engrossing series hellbent on pushing boundaries in both story and art.
