by | Feb 16, 2017

Suicide Squad was directed by David Ayer ( Fury) and stars Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman,  Viola Davis, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Common. The film is about a secret government agency that recruits imprisoned supervillains to execute dangerous black ops missions in exchange for clemency. It was released as an extended cut on Digital HD November 15 and Blu-ray on December 13.

It feels good to be bad…Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

Thanks to Batman-News.com, we can confirm that Hacksaw Ridge director Mel Gibson has definitely been in preliminary talks about directing Suicide Squad 2. When asked about the rumour, Gibson responded to say that he and the studio are on “Kind of a first date”.

Variety also revealed three other directors who are in the running for the project and they include more ‘realistic choices’, since Gibson himself has yet to direct a ‘popcorn’ style film, mostly sticking with Oscar bait (which in my opinion is probably where he should remain to keep what little credibility he has left). Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad), Daniel Espinosa (Life, Safe House), and Jonathan Levine (The Night Before, Warm Bodies) have all been names bandied about alongside Gibson. All of them have flirted with potential comic book adaptations in the past few years.

I had a good time with Suicide Squad. Sure it wasn’t as good as we all hoped it would be, because it tried a little too hard to be Deadpool by injecting an overload of silly over-the-top moments into the usually grim DC Comics Movie Universe. I kind of agree with that decision to make that world more fun though and I believe they did plenty of things right, including Harley Quinn and Deadshot, who stole the show. My choice for the sequel would be someone like Ruben Fleischer, who deserves another crack at the big-screen, big-budgeted world even though Gangster Squad bombed at the box office.
