From Marvel and Telltale Games comes the episodic adventure series Marvel’s Guardians of The Galaxy! The season pass disc is available now for PS4 and XBox One, while episode one is also available for play and download on those two platforms as well as iOS, Android and Windows. Here is my review of episode one “Tangled Up in Blue” on Xbox One.
The Guardians of the Galaxy discover an item of great power and must defend it from a malicious entity that wants it for himself. Voice stars include: Scott Porter (Starlord), Brandon Paul Eells (Drax), Nolan North (Rocket), Emily O’Brien (Gamora), Adam Harrington (Groot), Faye Kingslee (Hala) and Jeremy Shada (Young Peter Quill).
Telltale Games continue to revolutionise how we play videogames – blurring the lines between film and interactive gaming. They’ve once again struck gold with Guardians of The Galaxy – their second dive into the superhero genre, following up their ultra badass Batman series. If I could only play one type of game for the rest of my life it would be Telltale – because the writing is pure gold. I sometimes forget that I have to hit a dialog choice because I’m so wrapped up in what’s going on in the story.
For episode one ‘Tangled Up in Blue’, we take on the role of Peter Quill, aka Starlord for every dialog choice screen and much of the action, but there is one spectacular sequence where you will have to execute quick-time button matching as the ENTIRE team while they fight Thanos. Yes they fight THANOS in the first episode and the outcome is stunning. I have to say — I did NOT see that coming… Almost to the point where the first episode of five, felt like the finale because the battle was so epic. 
I loved the little detective moments where Quill has to use his memory device (seen at the start of the first film) in order to replay events of a nasty fight early on, and you’ll get to fly around on his rocket boots, which was hella fun and almost makes me wish the entire game was just an action-based title. You will get plenty of chances to blast your way out of trouble though, so don’t worry about getting hammered with speeches the entire time. The music was damn perfect too – I love that James Gunn (who directed the two films) had a say in the tunes because it was glorious. I won’t even spoil it for you, but it helps align the Telltale game with the blockbuster movie franchise perfectly.
The first episode was funny, featured one battle in particular that may be the most epic fight of any Telltale Games franchise and it nicely captured the essence of the films while still retaining it’s own comic-book vibe along the way. Marvel’s Guardians of The Galaxy on Telltale Games is a must-own and it’s fun for the whole family too which is a nice change of pace from the adult content of the Walking Dead seasons. It’s only a matter of time before we hopefully get a dialog choice screen of nothing but “I am Groot” as well — and I’m dying for that moment.
