Two 17th-century Portuguese missionaries return to Japan to minister to Christians who’ve been outlawed.

Martin Scorsese’s follow-up to the 2013 Oscar nominated Wolf of Wall Street is finally hitting theaters this year. It looks unlike any other project the filmmaker has put out in ages. It’s a period piece set in the 17th Century and features a lot of grim imagery and brooding content as missionaries played by Adam Driver and Andrew Garfield are tasked with locating a fellow colleague played by Liam Neeson in Japan. There are crucifixions, sword battles and many more unsettling images from the trailer. With the limited release hitting before year’s end, look for Silence to enter the Oscar race as all of Scorsese’s films tend to do.
