The Walking Dead revolves around the life of Rick Grimes, a small-town police officer and his family, and a number of other survivors who have banded together in order to survive after the world is overrun with zombies.
If you’re like me then you’ve been clamouring for Negan’s release so that we can truly shake things up once again during what is seemingly a lull in The Walking Dead where chaos and death have taken a backseat in order to catch everyone up with various characters who have been missing for several issues: Michonne and Dwight etc.
After his cell was left open, Negan did what Negan doesn’t do and Negan stayed put in order to build trust with Rick upon his return. I think Kirkman was going for a twist where the readers would be expecting a kill or two here but instead we see Negan try to be the reasonable one — for some reason though — I kinda saw this coming. I saw it coming because Kirkman has been delivering these kinds of twists since All Out War when very few major deaths occurred, which in itself was a shocker considering the past this comic has had.
So even though Negan didn’t miraculously escape, he did have some amazing dialogue exchanges with his nemesis and boy did I ever miss that vulgar charm of his. This back and forth is the meat of issue #141 but it’s the shocking final three pages that really hit readers hard. After Rick and Andrea talk about the consequences of killing to survive being an idea of the past, we switch locations to The Hilltop and find the complete opposite side of that spectrum in one of Adlard’s best two page spreads ever. It was both darkly comedic, horrifying and a joy to behold because I’m a sadistic bastard and the more death that Walking Dead has to offer – I’m OK with that. The cast is larger than ever and I prefer a tighter ship.
