The Walking Dead #143: Rick May Have Finally Met his Match in Alpha & The Whisperers [Review]

by | Jun 25, 2015

From writer Robert Kirkman and artist Charlie Adlard comes The Walking Dead comic series from Skybound and Image. Check out my review of issue #143.

The Walking Dead revolves around the life of Rick Grimes, a small-town police officer and his family, and a number of other survivors who have banded together in order to survive after the world is overrun with zombies.

After a lackluster issue, Kirkman has ramped up the tension in issue 143 as the search for Carl comes to a head and Rick meets the leader of the whisperers and possibly the largest threat his group has ever faced. Alpha is a cool character and having a female villain is a nice shakeup from past nemesis’ like Negan or The Governor. I’m really looking forward to seeing just how much of an impact she has on Rick and crew since everybody has been so comfortable for several issues and in the comic timeline – several months or so.

Carl has some interesting dialog where he finally lashes out at his father after Rick comes to the rescue. It’s in this moment where the reader starts to doubt just how badass Rick truly is anymore, since he can’t control his own son. I think he may have gotten soft but time will tell. Ezekiel’s conversation with some ship captain about how Michonne still has feelings for him was a nice addition and sheds a little more light on their situation. I can’t wait for the upcoming Telltale videogame which fills in the time gap where Michonne decided to leave the group and become some pirate. I’m sure she had her reasons.

For being another set-up chapter, issue 143 still does a great job building tension and if the last couple pages are any indication coupled with Kirkman’s comments in the letter section – shit is about to get serious in 144 right before SDCC 2015. The Whisperers are not the idle threat I thought they were initially.
