From writer Robert Kirkman and artist Charlie Adlard comes The Walking Dead comic series from Skybound and Image. Check out my review of issue #145.
The Walking Dead revolves around the life of Rick Grimes, a small-town police officer and his family, and a number of other survivors who have banded together in order to survive after the world is overrun with zombies.
After the stunning conclusion to issue 144, there really wasn’t much time for anything other than grief, sadness and anger in the fallout of #145. After the deaths of several characters, including two major ones at the hands of the whisperers, or should I say at the tips of their machetes — we deal with Rick and crew trying to cope with the most devastating blow their group has suffered since issue 100.
I’m going to spoil the shocking deaths from issue 144, because it’s those specific casualties that drive the survivors forward in this issue… You have been warned:
Major Spoiler Warning:
After we bear witness to Whisperer leader Alpha and her fury, Rick and Michonne are left to pick up the pieces of what is left of their new foe’s wrath. Several decapitated heads of their loved ones, shoved atop a makeshift fence of stakes stand before them. The final two belonging to Rosita and Ezekial.
Michonne is wrecked — even though she had left Ezekial during the time gap, she still loved him and this is what? The 2nd or third guy during this series whom she’s loved that has wound up brutally decapitated and or dead. Her immediate reaction is to lash out but I love the way Rick and her cope with the situation because Rick knows that she will need her vengeance eventually – even if it could cripple the empire that he’s strived to build and maintain.
Most of this chapter is grief and rage which I have no doubt will continue forward into issue 146 as Rick takes news back to Alexandria of how even more people just lost their friends and family to a group of skin wearing psychopaths. Eugene and Rosita were trying to build a family together — that dude is going to be crushed… I’m assuming Rick will propose that his camp will have to sit on this awful news because he’s well aware that if he retaliates now — that huge ass herd of walkers will stomp that ass. Hard. Alpha and the whisperers are by far the biggest threat that Rick has ever faced because up until now — walkers were an uncontrollable element amidst the battle between human survivors. But now — they’re a weapon that can be pointed any which way Alpha chooses.
