The Witcher 3: A Massive & Gorgeous Cinematic Experience [Review]

by | May 25, 2015

I know some people are waiting to buy The Witcher 3 in fear of corrupt save-file bugs on the Xbox or just simply waiting for price drops. I’m not here to spoil the story or walk you through the events of the game; I am here to tell you to get off the fence about playing CD Projekt RED’s latest instalment in The Witcher franchise.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the third and last game detailing the story of Geralt of Rivia by CD Projekt RED. The game’s atmosphere is set in the aftermath of the events of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. It is available now for PC, Xbox One & PS4.

The game is a massive story driven almost cinematic experience. Although the main storyline isn’t overly exciting, the way they present it to you keeps you drawn in and wanting to find out what happens next. The main characters are written quite well and make you excited about them and feel interested in their stories and what they have to say.

The free roaming open world in The Witcher 3 is massive and features plenty of side quests and other activities to do if you feel the need to take a break from the long, slow moving main story. The people you meet out in the world come with big and intriguing tales that really make you feel like you are a part of it and genuinely want to help them. Or exploit them for money if that’s how you want to play through the game, no judgement.  Sometimes the conversation options felt a bit pointless but it certainly added to the plot of that particular NPC’s ramblings.

The combat system in The Witcher 3 is the best in the series yet. They refined the parry ability to make it much simpler to use yet managed to find a way to keep the combat feeling as real as possible with a controller/mouse and keyboard. Each type of enemy has different strategies and ways you can better defeat them and while sometimes it can be frustrating to figure them out, it’s a ton of fun once you do.

The Witcher 3 is a gorgeous looking game that fully utilises the capabilities of current gen consoles and gaming PC’s. The world inside the game really comes to life, with plenty of attention to detail and the addition of all the goings on around you, it’s easy to get fully immersed in the game.  The sound design only adds to the realism of the world and a soundtrack you don’t mind listening to during the hours you spend playing.

In short I would have to say The Witcher 3 is one of my favorite RPG’s of all time and I give it a 9/10. With its 36 different possible endings, your decisions weigh in heavily and can really affect how you want  to play through the game. Combined with stellar graphics, extremely well done RPG elements and exciting story, you’ll no doubt have plenty to do and keep you interested in this game right through to the end.
