TOP 5 COMICS TO BUY – 06/29/16: Hot Damn, Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas & Sweetness

Wednesday is here, and new comics are within reach. So you may be like me and still have a stack of comics that haven’t been read from last week, but here is a list of new titles I will be picking up at my local comic shop.

I’m stepping in for Scott who handles our regular scheduled programming to give comic pulls a swing this week and hopefully not wreck this column. I love this week specifically because I’ve chosen zero Marvel/DC or even Image books for that matter. I love shining a light on lesser known titles and New Comic Book Day 06/29/16 is perfect for that. So take a peak.

Sweetness #1 – $3.99

Z2 Comics: Miss Lasko-Gross, Kevin Colden

“The Sweetness by wife and husband duo Miss Lasko Gross and Kevin Golden follows two badass female intergalactic smugglers of a mysterious controlled substance who cater to the unique tastes of alien drug addicts.” – Aliens and drugs and smuggling oh my. This title sounds delicious.

Hot Damn #3 – $3.99

IDW: Ryan Ferrier, Valentin Ramon

“While Costello works on his escape plan to get out of Hell, Teddy is fast becoming bff’s with Satan, who’s actually so nice, you guys. Heaven, on the other hand, is a real mess thanks to a couple of rude angels. But hey, who likes reanimated corpses?!” – This series is some of Ferrier’s best work maybe even the very best. His and Ramon’s hilarious take on Hell and Heaven is a must-buy.

Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas #2 – $4.99

IDW: Troy Little

“Troy Little’s gonzo adaptation of Hunter Thompson’s Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas is now available in an all-new format. The Village Voice says, ‘Cartoonist Troy Little reimagines [the] gonzo tour-de-force in a new graphic novel adaptation… buzzing with manic energy.’ This comic book version is presented in black-and-white and at a slightly larger size than the full-color hardcover edition. Each issue also includes pages from Little’s sketchbook and other behind-the-scenes information.”

Cryptocracy #1 – $3.99

Dark Horse: Van Jensen, Pete Woods

“For time beyond memory, the Nine Families watched from the shadows, believing themselves shepherds and manipulating whole societies as they saw fit. Nothing happened that they didn’t observe or control. Outsiders knew naught of the Families, much less threatened them. Until now.” – Van Jensen is a strong writer who departed DC Comics earlier this year so I’m looking forward to see him tackling something much different than The Flash.

Will Eisner’s The Spirit #12– $3.99

Dynamite: Matt Wagner, Dan Schkade, Eric Powell

“This exciting and action-packed climactic issue of Dynamite’s critically acclaimed series, finally finds The Sprit in the merciless clutches of the criminal warlord, Mikado Vaas! At last, this mysterious villain has stepped forward to save his daughter, Sachet Spice, and to wreck his ultimate vengeance on one of Comicdom’s most famous and iconic heroes. Beaten and bloody, The Spirit fights on with the help of his beloved and familiar supporting cast? but will this finally prove to be the time that our hero can’t escape death? With thirty pages of inspired story by Wagner and dynamic visuals from the art team of Dan Schkade and colorist Brennan Wagner, this highly acclaimed series that was launched to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Will Eisner’s influential character at last reaches its dramatic conclusion.”
