TOP 5 COMICS TO BUY – 01/25/17: ANIMOSITY THE RISE, BLOODSHOT USA & D4VEOCRACY

Keven here and I’ll be your substitute today in place of your regular comics expert guy Scott — so without further adieu I present to you all my top 5 New Comic Book Day Pulls for this glorious jampacked January 25th, 2017.

This week is stacked…. One of the best new comic book days in quite some time I think. Check out my pulls below:

Animosity – The Rise (One Shot) – $3.99

Aftershock – Marguerite Bennett, Marshall Dillon & Juan Doe

Keven’s Thoughts: This was my favorite new series of 2016 and I’ve been salivating at the chance to read through the chaos that I know this special one-shot will be exploding with as we go back to the minutes after the animals woke up. If it’s anything like the first issue was – and it looks damn well like it is – then we are in for another comic of the year candidate and it’s only January folks.

“The Animals thought, spoke and took revenge. The dust has settled and the blood has dried, but a new force is rising in the West, ready to help Animal-kind seize power in the dark new world to come…”

Spinning out from Marguerite Bennett’s hit new series ANIMOSITY is this special one-shot, illustrated by AMERICAN MONSTER’s very own Juan Doe! Witness the devastating effects of “The Wake” and how it affected other parts of the world on that terrifying day!

Bloodshot USA #4 – $3.99

Valiant – Jeff Lemire, Doug Braithwaite, Brian Reber

Keven’s Thoughts: My favorite superhero comic series of 2016 is wrapping up it’s most ambitious story arc yet as Bloodshot USA comes to an explosive close. I’m very curious to see how this one plays out because Lemire is easily one of the best comic writers on the planet and his work on hero books is unrivalled.

Liberty and judgment for all! A weaponized virus has turned New York into a war zone?and Bloodshot is about to make his last stand for the heart and soul of every man and woman brutalized by the effects of a nanite-enhanced plague! But just when his one-man invasion of the Big Apple seems lost, the hard-coded weapon of mass destruction called Deathmate will re-appear to save the day – and secure Project Rising Spirit’s spot as the saviors of New York! Will her programming win out?or will the woman inside the machine seek the vengeance for which she has long yearned?

In the shadow of the Statue of Liberty, a new war will soon be fought?and all of America is about to bear witness! The game-changing finale to Valiant’s biggest standalone event yet gets ready to rewrite the history books when New York Times best-selling writer Jeff Lemire (Death of X, Moon Knight) and superstar artist Doug Braithwaite (ARMOR HUNTERS, Justice) bring Bloodshot and Deathmate barreling down on the city that never sleeps!

D4veocracy #1 – $3.99

IDW – Ryan Ferrier, Valentin Ramon

Keven’s Thoughts: Ryan Ferrier and Valentin Ramon go together like Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. I love seeing these two collaborate and D4ve is one of the most clever and funny comic series today, giving us a glimpse into the future, which is loaded with ridiculous bullshit. I love it.

Ryan Ferrier and Valentin Ramon are back with D4VEOCRACY, the third arc of the acclaimed D4VE series. In the wake of a robo-political assassination, D4VE begins a presidential campaign. A hip new app startup has other plans for the robot society, however, and creates the perfect political rival. From the acclaimed creative team of D4VE, D4VE2, and HOT DAMN!

Reborn #4 – $3.99

Image Comics – Mark Millar, Greg Capullo, Jonathan Glapion, FCO Plascensia

Keven’s Thoughts: If the afterlife were this cool and people knew that it would be this damn cool ahead of time, then I’d be in Church every damn Sunday. Millar and Capullo’s ‘Reborn’ turns Heaven and Hell into some sort of wonderful hybrid of Dungeons and Dragons meets Gears of War meets Game of Thrones and then ups the ante even further.

MILLAR & CAPULLO’s epic sci-fi fantasy story continues. Bonnie and Tom are chained and dragged to Black Wish Mountain, where they are confronted by a vengeful figure from the past. Will they escape to find Harry, or be turned over to Lord Golgotha?

Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adventures #3 – $3.99

IDW/DC – Matthew Manning, Jon Sommariva

Keven’s Thoughts: I’ve been reading this series with my kids and not only do they love it, but so do I. The comedy from Manning as these two universes collide is refreshing and the mash-up is flawless as we see the Dark Knight teaming up with the turtles to battle villains like Snakeweed, or inevitably The Joker/Shredder tag team from hell. It doesn’t get any better than this Saturday Morning Cartoon fans. Not even close.

A fiendish alliance unfolds behind the scenes, unbeknownst to Batman and the TMNT as they are forced to fight a Poison Ivy-powered Snakeweed!
