TOP 5 COMICS TO BUY – 03/16/16: BLACK CANARY, THE DOORMAN & AMAZING FOREST

by | Mar 15, 2016

Wednesday is here, and new comics are within reach. So you may be like me and are still reading through the stack of comics from the last couple weeks, better make some room for these new titles I will be picking up at my local comic shop.

Like many I try to budget my purchases, which can become difficult with the vast amount of quality books being published currently. So here are 5 titles worth looking into this week, and a couple honorary mentions for those that decide to walk all week instead of buying gas.

amazingforest3Amazing Forest #3 – $3.99

Ulises Farinas, Erick Freitas, Zoe Crockett, Austin Breed, Job Yamen, Skuds Mckinley

Tales for the bold. Ideas for the strange. Ulises Fariñas, Erick Freitas, and a cavalcade of new talents bring to life amazing fantastical tales: Founding father Ben Franklin fighting legendary dragons! A man discovers his dog’s secret life! A boy finds the ultimate wish fulfillment! And a tale of a long-lost friend coming back…for revenge!”

blackcanary9Black Canary #9 – $2.99

Matthew Rosenberg, Moritat, Lee Loughridge, Guillem March

I am a huge fan of the current run of Black Canary, and really love the look and tone Brendan Fletcher and Annie Wu create in this book. This weeks issue 9 takes a side step from the regularly planned story and features the talented writing skills of Matthew Rosenberg, of last years hits series We Can Never Go Home, with art from Moritat and Lee Loughridge. The story centres around the Black Canary band as they return to Gotham to preform a gig for Gotham’s upper-class villains. For those readers wondering, this is only a one-shot story and Fletcher and Wu will be back for issues 10-12.

doorman1The Doorman #1 – $3.99

Eliot Rahal, Daniel Kibblesmith, Kendall Goode

Heavy Metal is publishing some great titles right now, and it sounds like The Doorman is going to be another. The book is about inter-planetary travel via portals. The main character, Henry, is Earths Doorman and is his final day on the job. Chaos erupts when alien assassins show up being chased by a world-hopping detective. At first glance you may not recognize these creators names but Eliot Rahal (The Paybacks), Daniel Kibblesmith (The Late Show with Stephen Colbert) and Kendall Goode are sure to bring the hilarity with this book.

elasticator1Elasticator #1 – $3.99

A.C. Medina, Kevin Shah

This book seems like a real underdog to me, many readers may not be too familiar with Scout Comics, but that could also be because they recently changed from being Ardden Entertainment. However, Elasticator as a character also seems a bit like an underdog. Struggling to make ends meet which living in Brooklyn, while having to confront the government and organized crime that run the city. A humorous take on the hardships of being a superhero, keep an eye out for Elasticator this Wednesday.

ratqueens15Rat Queens #15 – $3.99

Kurtis J. Wiebe, Tess Fowler, Tamra Bonvillain, Ed Brisson, Stjepan Sejic

Is this the end of the Rat Queens friendship? Regardless of what happens I have full faith in this amazing creative team. Bring on the magic and adventure as the story treks down unknown paths.
