TOP 5 COMICS TO BUY – 07/08/15: ARCHIE, SAGA & LANDO

by | Jul 8, 2015

It is Wednesday again, and this week there are tons of great titles. I keep looking over the list I made and narrowing it down to my top 5 is so difficult. I have decided this week to apply a bit of a theme to the books I will be picking up at my local comic shop.

Like many, I try to budget my purchases, this week I will likely be going over my budget. Here are 5 titles that shouldn’t be overlooked this week, and a 5 honorary mentions for those that are willing to stretch that wallet or have some extra cash from cutting your neighbour’s lawn.

Don’t forget to tweet us your picks @FoxForce5News #ff5comics

This weeks theme is “Double Down”, because there are multiple comics by the same writers or artists.

Archie #1 – $3.99archie1

This loveable kid from Riverdale has finally grown up, and like Afterlife With Archie did when it debuted in 2013, Mark Waid (Daredevil) and Fiona Staples (Saga) approach this re-launched series with a more mature tone. A new direction for Archie Comics has began, and this first issue should not be missed. Additionally, with 20+ alternate covers, getting your hands on this book should not be a problem.

Strange Fruit  #1 – $3.99strangefruit1

Mark Waid’s second book this week (“Double Down”) is set in the 1920’s in a small Mississippi town. Accompanied by artist J.G. Jones (Y: The Last Man), these two creators tell the story of an impending flood. As the water levels of the Mississippi River rise, so do the cultural and social tensions. Who or what is on the horizon to release the pressure, and will the water be too high by that time?

Saga #30 – $2.99saga30

Fiona Staples’ other book this week is Saga. Partnered with Brian K.Vaughan (Y: The Last Man), for their monthly intergalactic, fantasy, romance, these two creators consistently bring their ‘A’ game to every issue. If you have not figured out by now, characters in this series are expendable, and issue 29 made that very clear. It seems like Vaughan and Staples are just getting started, even though this weeks issue is a milestone at #30. Cannot wait to pick this, and 30 more issues of Saga up.

Star Wars Lando #1– $3.99lando1

I could not have been more excited when this book was announced as part of Marvel’s Star Wars Comic series. There is so much story to tell for this character everybody loves, and with comic duo Charles Soule (Inhuman) and Alex Maleev (Daredevil) at the helm, it is definitely in good hands. The other Star Wars books have been fantastic so far, and there is so much potential for amazing stories of Lando Calrissian’s history. I am fascinated to read about all of the conniving and swindling adventures, and even possibly how he acquired the Millenium Falcon. Star Wars fanatic or not, this book is a must buy.

Civil War #1 – $4.99civilwar1

Charles Soule “Doubles Down” with Civil War, a Secret Wars Tie-in. Sharing its name with the  Marvel event from 2006 by Mark Millar, this book explores a region of Battleworld where you have to decide if you are aligned with Iron Man or Captain America. Leinil Francis Yu (Superior) is on board for the art and to see whether these two opposing forces can put their differences aside after six years of constant battle, or if their hatred for one another going to tear this territory apart.
Extra pulls: Batman #42, 1872 #1, Constantine The Hellblazer #2, Pisces #3, Injection #3
