It is Wednesday again, I am looking at the stack of comics I have not had the chance to read from the week(s) previous, and here I am making a list of titles I will be picking up at my local comic shop.
Like many I try to budget my purchases, which can become difficult with the vast amount of quality books being published currently. So here are 5 titles worth looking into this week, and a couple honorary mentions for those that have some extra cash from finding that lost cat and collecting the reward.
DC Comic Bombshells #1 – $3.99
Marguerite Bennett, Marguerite Sauvage, Ant Lucia
Though readers have had a chance to get their hands on this title already, as a DC digital first comic, the first couple issues are collected into this printed version. The Marguerites (Bennett & Sauvage) bring the popular DC Bombshell statues to the front lines of World War II. I prefer to own the physical copies of comics, so I am really excited that this book has made it to the printed page. Can’t wait to see some DC heroines in their 40s inspired outfits.
Jeremy Haun, Jason A. Hurley
Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley illustrate a world about society’s obsession with vanity and how it is within anyone’s grasp. I am excited to see how this idea of beauty can be taken to the extreme end of the spectrum, and how Haun and Hurley will be applying this concept within the detective procedural story.
Phonogram The Immaterial Girl #1 – $3.99
Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie, Matt Wilson, Clayton Cowles
I will be honest, I likely won’t be picking this title up until the trade paperback is released. I was late to the game when reading the previous Phonogram volumes, and want this to complete the collection. That being said, I encourage everyone to pick this up, whether or not you read the original series. This whole creative team has an amazing ability to produce what I consider some of the best quality comics on the market right now.
Jonathan Hickman, Esad Ribic, Alex Ross
It is no question that Doom needed Stephan Strange to keep Battleworld in order. Now that Strange is gone, will Doom be able to fill his position? Is there anyone else he could possibly trust as much as Strange? Perhaps it wasn’t only Battleworld he was keeping in check, but Doom as well. Will Doom resort to his old ways, and will Reed Richards be the key to his fall from God-dom.
Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #8 – $3.99
Ryan North, Erica Henderson
Squirrel Girl versus Ratatoskr (Norse Squirrel God). Yes, there is a Norse Squirrel God. This is exactly what I love about this book, I would have never thought there was such a God… but there is. Also, as expected when a story involves Norse Gods, you can guess Thor will be close behind. Always tons of fun when Squirrel Girl gets to make new friends.
Extra pulls: Constantine The Hellblazer #3, A-Force #3, Howard The Duck #5, Star Wars Lando #2, Batman #43
