TOP 5 COMICS TO BUY – 08/19/15: RAT QUEENS, BOOK OF DEATH & WELCOME BACK

It is Wednesday again, I am looking at the stack of comics I have not had the chance to read from the week(s) previous, and here I am making a list of titles I will be picking up at my local comic shop.

Like many I try to budget my purchases, which can become difficult with the vast amount of quality books being published currently. So here are 5 titles worth looking into this week, and a couple honorary mentions for those that have some extra cash from last nights bingo winnings.

Archie #2 – $3.99

Mark Waid, Fiona Staples

I never read much Archie comics as a child. Though I am familiar with his story, this “All-New” Archie reboot did exactly what was intended, and got me hooked on the dynamic characters. Both Mark Waid and Fiona Staples do a marvellous job creating a story about the many people of Riverdale. In the first issue, I found myself more interested in Jughead, than I did with Archie. I know Jughead will be getting his own book soon enough, which I also cannot wait to read, but I hope that I am able to learn a bit more about each of Archie’s gang in every issue.

Book of Death #2 – $3.99

Robert Venditti, Robert Gill, Doug Braithwaite, Cary Nord

It appears that the time for talking is done, as Eternal Warrior will have face his most difficult battle…against his friends and Unity partners. Fulfilling his duty as the protector of the Geomancer, regardless of what time they are from, will always be the top priority. Will his actions be enough to convince the Unity team that disasters are not the result of the new Geomancer’s arrival. Perhaps the answer lies hidden in the Book of Death.

Howard the Human #1 – $3.99

Skottie Young, Jim Mahfood

In this inverted story, the one-of-a-kind private investigator, Howard, is nothing more than a Human. But nothing comes easy for Howard, in this world he is the only Human, in a world of anthropomorphic animals. This strange Secret Wars tie-in is brought to us by the creative minds of Skottie Young and Jim Mahfood. A part of me hopes that this version of Howard somehow survives Secret Wars and can team up with with Howard the Duck for a insane investigation.

Rat Queens #11 – $3.99

Kurtis J. Wiebe, Tess Fowler, Tamra Bonvillain, Stjepan Sejic

Whether its coming out on a regular monthly schedule or not, it always feels like its been too long since the last Rat Queens issue. So now that the Rat Queens are back, what better time for a road trip! Of all the places to possibly travel to, the Queens are heading to Mage University. Road trips and University sound like just the right amount trouble and parties Hannah, Violet, Dee and Betty like to get themselves into.

Welcome Back #1 – $3.99

Christopher Sebela, Jonathan Brandon Sawyer, James Harvey

Welcome Back is this weeks wild card. I know very little information about its content other than the description provided in the solicitations. Regardless, a book about reincarnated assassins consistently battling each other through their various lives and bodies over many years sounds right up my alley. Now add in art that is compared to favourites like Becky Cloonan and Sean Gordon Murphy, and we have a book that I wish was already in my hands. So do not hesitate to pick this up with the rest of your books this week.

Extra pulls: Black Canary #3, Power Up #2, Star Wars #8, Wolf #2, Young Terrorist #1
