TOP 5 COMICS TO BUY – 10/12/16: GREAT LAKE AVENGERS, BLACK MONDAY MURDERS & BRITANNIA

by | Oct 11, 2016

Wednesday is here, and new comics are within reach. If you are like me, you may still have a stack of comics that haven’t been read from last week (or last month), but here is a list of new series starting this week, which I will be picking up at my local comic shop.

Like many readers I try to budget my purchases, which can become difficult with the vast amount of quality books being published currently. I have chosen to highlight five promising new titles to consider picking up this week.

greatlakeavengers1The Geat Lake Avengers #1 – $3.99

Marvel Comics – Zac Gorman, Will Robson, Tamra Bonvillain

To some readers, comic publishers digging up and dusting off their almost forgotten propertiesmay seem like a bad idea. In my opinion, bringing back a team like The Great Lake Avengers is genius. The only Marvel titles i really enjoy reading are the ones that take a less serious and more fun/light-hearted approach to storytelling (like Squirrel Girl and Howard the Duck). Marvel has made a fantastic decision to bring writer Zac Gorman on board for this series, his work on the Rick & Morty comic has been perfect in keeping the hilarious tone the television show made so popular. Based on the previews I have scene, the art pairing of Will Robson and colourist-extraordinaire Tamra Bonvillain look like they will compliment comedic tone.

britannia2Britannia #2 – $3.99

Valiant Entertainment – Peter Milligan, Juan Jose Ryp, Jordie Bellaire, Cary Nord

Dispatched to the remote outpost of Britannia by Rome’s highest power, the ancient world’s first detective – veteran legionnaire Antonius Axia – has found himself on a horrifying journey that will challenge everything he knows about death, destiny, and the limits of reality itself. But in this wild and pagan land, far removed from Nero’s control and influence, how will he grapple with the witches, demons and deities that lurk just out of sight? These are aberrations beyond the comprehension of a citizen of history’s most civilized empire…and, as Axia searches for the truth behind their making, he must first ask himself: Are these monsters truly creatures of myth…or creations of his own mind?

blackmondaymurders3Black Monday Murders #3 – $4.99

Image Comics – Jonathan Hickman, Tomm Coker, Michael Garland, Rus Wooton

The is nothing quite like this comic. A story about a dark, occult power that has been in place for many years, the cause of much of the money in America and the world. A recent death has started an investigation into something much larger than any regular murder. Hickman takes the idea of storytelling to a new level by using infographics and text documents to make the reader feel like they are part of the plot.

killorbekilled3Kill or be Killed #3 – $3.99

Image Comics – Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips, Elizabeth Breitweiser

Anyone familiar with this creative teams previous work should already be reading this title. Those comic readers who aren’t, please pick up this book and find some back issues or trade paperbacks of their previous work (lucky for you the hardcover collection of The Fade Out is also out Wednesday). This book focuses on a character whose life is dependant on murdering others. Most interesting is how this character determines and convince himself what a just killing is, who is not deserving.

spidersclone1The Clone Conspiracy #1 – $4.99

Marvel Comics – Dan Slott, Jim Cheung, Gabriele Dell’Otto, Justin Ponsor

I often criticize the Amazing Spider-Man series, but the story leading up to the Clone Conspiracy has been more interesting than normal. Whether you are a fan of the many Spider-Clone stories of the past, this is a must read for all Spider-Man fans.

Extra Pulls: All-Star Batman #3, Detective Comics #942, The Flash #8, Glitterbomb #2, Wonder Woman #8
