It is Wednesday again, I am looking at the stack of comics I have not had the chance to read from the week(s) previous, and here I am making a list of titles I will be picking up at my local comic shop.
Like many I try to budget my purchases, which can become difficult with the vast amount of quality books being published currently. So here are 5 titles worth looking into this week, and a couple honorary mentions for those that have some extra cash you saved by avoiding going to the dentist for one more week.
Book of Death #4 – $3.99
Robert Venditti, Robert Gill, Doug Braithwaite, Cary Nord
The epic conclusion of Valiant’s blockbuster story, this is the fourth and final chapter to Book of Death. Robert Venditti has done a spectacular job with the story of Eternal Warrior and the young Geomancer thus far, and I have being eagerly awaiting what results when they come face-to-face with the evil Darque. How far will the the Valiant heroes go to stopping this dark force, and how will it effect them.
Black Magick #1 – $3.99
Greg Rucka, Nicola Scott
When this book was announced earlier this summer at Image Expo, it was one a the titles that really stood out. The genre of a noir style police procedural combined with the occult overtones of witches is right up my alley. Perfectly timed to be released just before Halloween, and from the creative minds of Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott, there is high hopes for this this book. Be sure to get a copy of this, it is sure to be an amazing piece of work.
Howling Commandos of SHIELD #1 – $3.99
Frank Barbiere, Brent Schoonover
This new Howling Commandos book doesn’t follow the group of WWII soldiers that you might have read about in previous Marvel books. Instead, this book follows a new group of commandos made up of monsters and aliens. The one constant is Dum Dum Dugan, leading this secret SHIELD team to take on supernatural threats too risky for the average agent. Frank Barbeire brings experience writing mystical and paranormal themes from the great series Five Ghosts, while the rising artist Brent Schoonover is on illustration duties.
Rick & Morty #7 – $3.99
Zac Gorman, CJ Cannon, Marc Ellerby
What I love about Rick & Morty, like I am sure many other do, is the unlikely, mis-adventures that occur in each plot. Zac Gorman does a fantastic job using a limited sample, only 21 TV episodes, to create a coherently new story for the Rick & Morty comic. This issue follows Morty as he tries to keep Rick from being exposed to a transdimensional virus which is killing Ricks in every dimension. Can’t wait to see how these two survive another crazy situation, but it will have to do until Season 3 starts, whenever that is.
The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #1 – $3.99
Ryan North, Erica Henderson
I admit that a lot of #1’s make it on my top 5 list every week, and most of the time this is a perfect opportunity for readers to give this title a try. So if you missed out picking up The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #1 earlier this year, now if the perfect chance to get on board. I could care less what number Marvel slaps on the cover, all I need to know is it stars Doreen Green, and has the creative team of Ryan North and Erica Henderson, and I am sold. Squirrel Girl is my favourite Marvel book on selves and will make my top 5 list every time, no matter who she is up against.
