Happy New Comic Book Day! Check out this week’s hottest releases including Animosity, Cosmic Ghost Rider and more!
Keven here – filling in for Scott, who buys WAY more comics than I do on a weekly basis, but I’m still a fan of some cool stuff so I’m sharing my top 5 pulls for the week of August 12, 2020 while he’s on holidays.
Check out my personal thoughts on each pick below as well:
ANIMOSITY #28 -$3.99
Publisher – Aftershock Comics
Creators – Marguerite Bennett , Elton Thomasi , Rafael De Latorre , Marcelo Maiolo
As the madness of the Kings of Texas reaches a fever pitch, the life blood of the empire boils up from below – ready to drown Jesse and Sandor in its flood. From creator/writer Marguerite Bennett (INSEXTS, DC Comics Bombshells, Batwoman) with artwork by Elton Thomasi & Rafael De Latorre.
Keven’s thoughts: Animosity has taken some very bizarre twists and turns this late into an incredible run from Aftershock’s best ongoing series. The imminent showdown between Sandor and Jesse makes me feel sick to my stomach, but I love the build-up from Bennett, who clearly does not give a shit if you wind up devastated or not. But that’s what makes this book so damn entertaining and potentially the most shocking as well as the most underrated post apocalyptic comic book on shelves.
BIG GIRLS #1 – $3.99
Publisher – Image Comics
Creators – Jason Howard
When men become giant monsters hellbent on destroying the world, only girls can stop them-BIG GIRLS. Meet Ember-she writes poetry, loves to read, and she’s a 300-foot-tall full-time monster killer! She and the other big girls are all that stand in the way of our world’s complete annihilation! Critically acclaimed artist JASON HOWARD (TREES) takes full creative control as the writer and artist of a tale that’s a cross between JOHN WICK and GODZILLA by way of HBO’s GIRLS.
Keven’s Thoughts: From the artist behind such brilliant Image series like Trees and Super Dinosaur, comes a story that brings a hearty dose of giant monster mayhem with a VERY cool twist that would make any Y: The Last Man fan intrigued. I’m excited to see Howard write his own story and I very much look forward to all the crazy shit I’m sure he has in store for us all.
REVENGE OF THE COSMIC GHOST RIDER #5 – $4.99
Publisher – Marvel Comics
Creators – Dennis “Hopeless” Hallum , Scott Hepburn
Cosmic Ghost Rider launches a one-man war as Cammi’s soul is dragged to hell! But as Cosmic Ghost Rider battles through the underworld to save her, he’ll discover that there’s something more dangerous than damnation lurking in the inferno. Don’t miss out as the explosive creative team of Dennis ‘Hopeless’ Hallum and Scott Hepburn raises hell in this epic series finale!
Keven’s Thoughts: Dennis Hallum’s mini-series comes to a close with this fifth issue and I’m a little bummed out to be honest because I think he’s done the best with the Donny Cates created character since that initial “Baby Thanos Must Die” arc. Cosmic Ghost Rider is easily my favorite Marvel character of the past couple years and I’m very satisfied with the job that Hallum and Hepburn have done here by truly embracing that anarchic and heavy metal flare that this anti-hero emanates from the page. Let them make an ongoing COSMIC GHOST RIDER series please!
VENOM #27 – $3.99
Publisher – Marvel Comics
Creators – Donny Cates , Juan Gedeon
When a new and dangerous foe erupts into Eddie Brock’s life, it threatens to rip away everything Eddie holds dear. His son, his symbiote, even himself – EVERYTHING Eddie Brock loves is in jeopardy! When a new and dangerous foe erupts into Eddie Brock’s life, it threatens to rip away everything Eddie holds dear. His son, his symbiote, even himself – EVERYTHING Eddie Brock loves is in jeopardy!
Keven’s Thoughts: Donny Cates’ Venom has resulted in this being the longest running Marvel comic that continues to stay in my pull file. I’ve never lasted this long with a book from the big 2 and there’s a reason for that. The artists have all done incredible work throughout but it’s the new characters and refreshing spins on the Venom mythology that have really struck a chord with me. I’ve always loved this character – he’s my favorite Spider-Man villain of all time and this series continues to make him even more badass in every way imaginable. When Knull finally arrives – he’s going to make Thanos’ infinity war look tame in comparison.
SEVEN SECRETS #1 – $3.99
Publisher – Boom! Studios
Creators – Tom Taylor , Daniele Di Nicuolo
For fans of Once & Future and Undiscovered Country comes an all-new original series from #1 New York Times best-selling author Tom Taylor (DCeased) and artist Daniele di Nicuolo (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) about seven powerful secrets-words, wonders, weapons, and worse-with the power to destroy the world.. Seven Secrets could destroy the world. For centuries they’ve been locked away and protected by The Order. When their stronghold is attacked and a secret revealed, the entire Order must go on the run. The Order’s youngest member, Caspar has been trained his entire life to protect the Secrets he will never know. Now is his chance to prove his worth-to become a Holder of one of the deadliest secrets in the world. But Caspar has a secret of his own. And his secret could prove more dangerous than anything the Order protects.
Keven’s Thoughts: I will buy anything that Tom Taylor writes because DCeased has been my favorite new comic franchise from the past couple years (that current run is INSANE – Plastic Man? GROSS). Seven Secrets isn’t a typical genre I would invest in, but the concept sounds really cool and the art from Daniele Di Nicuolo is very eye catching (her work on MMPR is badass).
